IQ Protection Ruminations (Sam Bell Jr) --__--__-- Message: 1 From: "Sam Bell Jr" To: Subject: [Eskrima] IQ Protection Ruminations Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 08:43:38 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I have been reading allot of posts about full contact sparring with and without protective equipment and I wanted to made a few comments. First off, I am brand new to Arnis, I have only been training for about 1-1/2 months, so I have yet to experience any real sparring yet, I;ve gotten my knuckles dinged a few times, that is it. When I first got into Police work, it was in 1983 as a U.S.A.F. Law Enforcement Specialist in the Security Police career field. When we were in Tech School, (the police academy) we were trained in P.A.R.T.(Physically Apprehension Restraint Techniques). Our senior instructor was a U.S. Marine M.P. and he would make sure that we applied the full amount of pressure to arm bars, joint locks and other moves. If he felt the aggressor was not being physical enough, he would perform the technique and you can bet you would get some serious pain inflicted upon you. He wanted us to all make darn sure we knew just how much pressure to apply to make the move effective. In my opinion, I think that full contact sparring is a necessary form of training. If you would need to use your sticks to defend yourself on the street, you sure wouldn't want to be pity-pattying with the attacker and get yourself injured of killed as a result. I feel that this method of training that should be taken on by experienced practitioners of their art. But how else will you know how it feels to get a good solid strike to your head or other place on your body. Quite allot of police depts. use Simunations (spelling) for their training. That is basically a paint round being fired out of a pistol cartridge. The officers all were protective gear, but the round does hurt when you get hit. We get pepper sprayed when we get trained so we will know how it feels if we ever get a dose on the street. Sorry for rambling, didn't get much sleep last night and the caffeine hasn't kicked in. Thanks for allowing me to climb on my soapbox. Suwertihin Ka Sana!
