I would prefer to be able to utilize all available training modes, from no equipment to being fully protected. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but in any case, these should be weighed and taken into account when training in whatever way. For eample, when training without protective equipment, control is essential so that you won't run out of training partners. The lack of protection forces you to focus on your technique and awareness and at the same time the reality of being injured. On the other hand, protective equipment allows you to go full bore without being permanently damaged, but at the same time, overreliance on protective equipment can cause you to forget your defense and leave yourself open to all sorts of unnecessary risks. Obviously both modes have their advantages and disadvantages, but on the whole, it would be good to train in as many ways as possible. There are numerous possibilities for combining both kinds of training and they ought to be explored. What has to be clear is the intention behind the training...when you do this kind of training, what are you doing it for and why, and what can you get out of it when you do it, and why you shouldn't rely on it too much but balance it with something else.... As a side note, since there has been discussion of full-contact matches without equipment, a few months ago I was talking to one of the senior masters of our style. He told me that when he was younger, matches were fought in his province without armor. However, the participants wore all white (white shirts, white pants) and their sticks were covered with soot. They could touch each other with their sticks using whatever techniques they knew, but they had to exercise enough control such that while blows were delivered with force, injuries were minimized (obviously they did happen). Winners were determined by whoever had the least soot marks on their body. As I understood his story, such matches relied more on skill than on brute force. After all, when the match was over, it was pretty obvious who was able to get in his shots more. Note...if I remember rightly, this man is already in his fifties... Now back to my regular job....
