Are there any Ilustrisimo practitioners out there? If there are none, I'll direct my question to fellow lawyer Marc Denny. Question: Does Kali Ilustrisimo have techniques against lowline attacks to the knee, either from a standup fighting position or a sudden diving crouch/squat just like Eric Knaus does in the "Real Contact Stickfighting" Tapes? I am asking this query in line with your statement that after you introduced the Ilustrisimo cross step (BTW, is that the Retirada Ilustrisimo on PG Sulite's tapes?), then the DB fighters ceased to rely on sudden low line squat attacks. 2. Does anyone here know of any old "manongs" from the Philippines who has seen death matches or juego todo and can relay to us how they looked like? ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? However, >the participants wore all white (white shirts, white >pants) and their sticks were covered with soot. They >could touch each other with their sticks using >whatever techniques they knew... The other variation was for seasoned Eskrimadors to engage in a friendly (non-death match) sparring, burning only both tips of the rattan almost to charcoal proportions. This was common in Visayas & Mindanao. My uncle, Master Herson Ramos, also had a match years ago with a Muslim Datu in Cotabato (Mindanao) wearing white garb and burnt-tip rattan. Unfortunately for the Datu, in front of his loyal subjects, he was embarrassed and only managed to put in about three dots on the chest area of Master Ramos and in the end, the Datu was covered with black marks all over his body. My uncle was managing a loading dock for boats/ships, his stevedores and workers were the loyal subjects of this Datu. As an aftermath of the friendly sparring match, he then earned the respect of his workers. An interesting cultural clash to note here is that my uncle was Visayan and a devout practicing Christian in the Cotabato Visayan-Christian community. At the earlier part of the last century, most Christians in Cotabato, Mindanao were treated like immigrants, although they had economic power in Mindanao. Obviously, managing a dockfull of Muslim workers, he did not quite get the respect earlier prior to this match since the Muslim workers were loyal to the Datu. Each mode of sparring teaches you different things. For instance, sparring without any kind of armour whatsoever teaches proper footwork, use of defensive techniques as well as offensive, proper execution of technique and above all, control. Agree or not, control is essential in all aspects of all kinds of martial arts, from boxing to out and out streetfighting. Just look at a Dog Brothers vid and you'll see a remarkable level of control from all the fighters. Just 'cos they're hitting harder doesn't mean they're not exercising control. Sparring with armour teaches power, speed and does concentrate on offense, but used properly should also develop good defensive skills. You don't have to just freestyle something to spar it. Insert 'handicaps' and rules according to what you want to develop. A good forehand, a good roofblock, perhaps just footwork. Imagination is the only boundary. As for grappling and just putting a lock on and thinking it's over - take my word for it, outside the kebab shop on a Saturday night, alcohol and adrenaline tends to override many feelings of pain. I have seen somebody win a fight after having their shoulder dislocated. Just don't rely on just putting the lock on. My JKD sifu taught me at a very early stage that biting and gouging can be negated, and ignored in the heat of a scuffle. Just a few thoughts, please forgive my typing and if it doesn't make sense, I've just got back from Hospital with a nasty cut to my finger that required six stitches after an accident with a kerambit! Doh! (That was the only protective gear available at the time.) But, to keep it interesting, it was usually 2-on-1. If I remember correctly, the only rules were no kicks to the groin or knees. (Later, we got some of those cool gloves like Bruce Lee wore in "Enter the Dragon".) GuroGarry __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
