I appreciate it. Before I start, I just want to say that I, in no way, mean to be disrespectful or arrogant to anyone I write to on the digest; I just like boucing ideas off of people who are probably much more experienced. (IOW, all goodwill on my side, lol) I have done a good share of pretty hard contact in the past (although, never really with weapons). So it is not that I have NEVER banged around; it is just I don't feel the need to do it nearly as much as I used to. I feel that I have a good idea of what I can take. I also think that I have developed over my 12 years of fighting experience, tactics that help me cope with bigger, stronger fighters. I just wonder how often I need to be injured to learn my lesson and keep it learned. One thing I've noticed in this thread of "protective gear: with or without" is comments to the effect of "My hand was so swollen, I couldn't fight for 3 weeks." Why do we need to do this multiple times to get the message? If you can learn your lesson by getting whacked once (or even better, someone else being whacked), I would say that you have a decent learning curve. If, while sparring, my partner can exploit my propencity to leave my arm exposed, I would hope that he or she would not feel the need to cripple me. One good smack is all I need to make me aware. Several more good smacks, and you have ceased to be doing me a favor. If my partner sees that I am struggling, I am definiately open to their critiques, much more than I am to them crippling me. SO, maybe I should have asked, if you already have experience with heavy fighting, do you need to continue to do it ad infinitum? Can you exchange some high impact for some sybolism without greatly compromising the quality of the exercise? Also, in a semi-related thread, what do you do for practice with bladed or stabbing weapons to keep a realistic idea of what you can take? Thank you again for input. I am interested in your response. -Nat Nickele __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Guro nate you have spent a lot of time earning that title. My apologies for not addressing you properly. Regards, Carlton H.
