Disfigured > knuckles is not a true sign of FMA brotherhood but IMO a sign of poor skill. I don't think banged up knuckles are a sign of brotherhood, but your statement on skill is a bit unfair. For starters, some ranges of FMA will risk the hand more than others. Garry is a Serrada practitioner, and the Serrada free-flow drills and lock-n-block training provide such a large number of fast exchanges in a short range that hands will inevidently be hit. These drills are more about training reactive blocks using Serrada counters rather than simulating fighting. A perfect practioner will execute every block impeccably, but on his path to proficiency, there are many knuckle lessons. Serrada counters contain many strikes to the hand and wrist. In practicing such strikes on a partner, hands and knuckles will be hit, bruised and somewhat disfigured. This is lessened by using a twig for a practice weapon, but inevitably, someone will use a log. I never aspired to be a hand model anyway. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 21:57:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Nate Defensor To: Eskrima Digest Subject: [Eskrima] "Nat" not Nate Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >>answer to Guro Nate Defensor's question of >>whether one >>can be a good fighter without hard contact - excellent explanation of >>how to be a good fighter. But to give Guro Defensor a complete answer to his >>question, the answer is Yes Al, I think someone named "Nat", not "Nate" posted that one. But to put in my 2 cents, I think both full contact and light/semi-contact are beneficial. I feel both types can develop real good fighting skills. Control is good to have FMA or non-FMA training. Full/Hard contact weapon and non-weapon training is good experience and training. Although, personally, I think beginners in FMA are a little too wild when it comes to hard contact, armor or light armor. Experience had shown the neophytes have been more prone to accidents/injuries, overeager, and sloppy when engaged in full/hard contact. But in retrospect, the experience was good. I wrote that disfigured knuckles were a sign of poor skill - I was wrong in Guro Garry's case. Being an "Old School" martial artist like Guro Gary, I was reminded that back in the 70's like him, full contact punishment, no padding and no control was the norm and not the exception as is today. Too bad that back in the day remedial skills such as Hilot was not well known as it is today. Luckily for Garimot students when we do get hit on our hands we immediately apply Hilot. The pain quickly goes away and no disfigurement. So to revise my opinion - "Old School" Escrimador - disfigured knuckles = Intense training "New School " Escrimador - disfigured knuckles = Why? Although I never met Guro Gary, I now hold him in high regard after reading his eye opening but exemplary email. So I will revert back to one of those old time sayings - "Do not judge a book by its cover". Raul Jornales is hoping arnis will become the next national sport. And he is planning to submit a formal proposal to President Arroyo, in recognition of the local martial art as a replacement to the decades-old national sport -- sipa. "I'm not trying to step on anybody's toes but [let's face it], sipa is dead," said the 42-year-old Jornales, who is also a muay Thai and karate enthusiast. "But [at the core of this] proposal, this is about loving your country, most especially Filipino martial arts." Citing the extensive exposure of arnis throughout the world, Jornales has been seeking a venue to voice out what he believes is a disappointing "national situation." "What I'm saying is we need to have our own identity. Japan has karate. In Korea it's taekwondo. "It's about heritage, pride and our culture. It's the right time [to make people aware on a national level.]" Jornales said he plans to pass his proposal personally to the Presidential Security Group or National Security Adviser Roilo Golez, so that "it goes straight to the President and we can avoid people from copying the idea." He had actually gone through several "channels" to lobby his idea, but Jornales admitted that it has been a "frustrating experience." "From now on, we have to make [this proposal] an objective and an obsession. It's [like] shooting the stars, but it's better to fail trying." One of the apparent criticisms that Jornales would have to face is from those who view arnis as a violent sport. Jornales quickly refuted the idea saying, "arnis is an art form too. And that in it's 'noncombat' nature, it has [what is called] a sayaw and an anyo." ================================== V/R Mr. George N.
