You don't get to hear about this so much anymore. That's a good point, earning respect by showing ability without having to hurt someone else to do it. Absolom + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + I had the opportunity to attend the Fall Arnis Training Camp hosted and taught by Punong Guro (Senior Teacher) Tom Bolden, this past weekend (9-13 & 14-03) in Poughkeepsie, NY. PG Bolden’s, presentation was excellent and of the highest quality. This training camp was a tour de force presentation that rocked from beginning to end. PG Bolden was assisted by Sifu Peter Vargas and they very convincingly demonstrated once again that Skill is the real indicator of Rank. Paper is nice, but skill speaks volumes without becoming loud, tasteless and potentially vulgar. PG Bolden, began the Saturday morning session with some basic warm-up exercises that were particularly useful for the several fist time students of arnis. The exercises involved using both single and double sticks, then some stick striking drill and finally the Modern Arnis 12 count striking angles with the complimentary blocks. Following the basic warm-up exercises, PG Bolden began to show the applications of the previous exercise drills. The smiles, grins and chuckles of delight surged through the room as the exercises were connected to one another creating a seamless flow from position to position. We then broke for lunch. Following lunch, Sifu Peter Vargas, took the lead position and instructed us on the footwork and mobility drills of PG Bolden’s American Modern Arnis / Pancipanci Eskrima System. This system is based on the related concepts of evasion, mobility, shifting, slipping and multiple striking with power. A number of us found this portion of the training to be somewhat humbling, since we were tripping over our own feet and looking like beginners in the martial arts; however, we were also laughing as Sifu Vargas, added some running commentary on our progress through the stepping drills. The footwork drills were then added to the stick striking and blocking patterns to gives us the complete basics package for the foundations of the American Modern Arnis / Pancipanci Eskrima approach to the dynamic art of self-defense. As the training progressed through the afternoon toward the complaining moments, we began to gain some insights into how these slipping and shifting movements could help us within our own systems. It was at this point that PG Bolden, began adding the empty hand applications of the single stick to create the self-defense applications for the previously taught material. The American Modern Arnis / Pancipanci System is without any doubt in my mind, one of the best variations of the FMAs that a person could study. It is a complete stand alone system and it is taught as such. As the first day wound down to a conclusion, this writer was given the opportunity to teach the participants something about the Gunting Knife. It began immediately obvious to the campers that all of the Gunting applications that I taught, fit so neatly into the instruction that had been provided earlier by PG Bolden and Sifu Vargas. The smiles, grins and laughter continued right through to the formal closing of the training for the first day. The Sunday, September 14th morning session began with PG Bolden, leading us through an abbreviated warm-up program. Several new people had joined us for the single day training program and they were also coached by people who had attended the day before. PG Bolden, added several innovations to the single stick blocking concepts that were previously taught. Now the emphasis shifted to the use of the off-hand or non-weapon hand. The techniques were rooted in the previous principles of motion that had been taught on Saturday. Next, Sifu Vargas, repeated his instruction on the footwork patterns. Most of us were ready this time and had less trouble coordinating our feet with our hand an sticks. As we switched partners and worked with people whose training was different from our own, we could sense how the ideas already taught were premised on solid, factual principles of human body mechanics and motion. Once again we had reached the lunch break and it really came too soon. The Sunday afternoon training session was open by PG Bolden, with a short review of the AMA/Pancipanci stick striking-blocking principles combined with the footwork. We then moved on to the empty hand skill development program which is based on the translation of stick techniques to empty hand self-defense applications. As the session continued we began to add our own individual pieces to the techniques being taught. Now we could really see where and how people from Pekiti Tersia, Vee Arnis, Goju Karate, BJJ, Parker Kenpo, JKD-Kali and Paradigm Eskrima would naturally alter the scripted techniques taught to suit their own training to handle the same attack. As we rotated from one partner to another, we had several opportunities to see and feel how we would respond to people with different training than our own. We also could see and feel how these same people would approach us, when we were the attackers. To put it mildly, there were some surprises! On the other hand, the laugher and good vibes from Saturday continued on through Sunday’s sessions. The AMA/Pancipanci Eskrima training routines were flexible enough to accommodate our individual training formats and preferences while adding new or more refined tools to our repertoires. PG Tom Bolden is a highly accomplished professional martial artist and teacher. He carries the mantle of Senior Teacher with dignity and style, with being pretentious or self absorbed. The man moves with grace, speed and power. He has eliminated virtually all wasted motion and he has the ability to transfer his knowledge to others through his teaching program. If you are interested in seeing how PG Bolden and Sifu Peter Vargas actually teach the AMA/Pancipanci Eskrima art, you can purchase the DVD series, “International Modern Arnis Symposium, 2003” from Sensei George Denson by calling 1-800-340-9664 or visiting the Video Quest web site at Both men were part of the 14 person instructional group at the Symposium. There are 5 DVDs within the set. To schedule a seminar or discuss training with PG Bolden or Sifu Vargas, you can contact them at and , respectively. This camp also provided the participants with the first glimpse of the emerging “GDI Arnis” format and organization. There will be more information forth-coming as the plans are developed, formalized and implemented. The working motto for the group is: “GDI Arnis: The Foundations & The Innovations” Jerome Barber, Ed.D. I still can't tell for sure if any was lost or not, hopefully that will become clear over the next few hours. So if you sent an email that you haven't seen come through, please please please send it again. Thanks.
