My knuckles have gotten dinged many times, most of them light raps, but most of the time it has been my fault. But once they get hit, it sure makes me remember what I did wrong and how not to repeat the same mistake twice. My instructor was teaching me some traps and dis-arms, and I was not clearing my legs out of the way fast enough, so he would strike my knee. After getting whacked a few times, I moved my legs allot faster. Eventually, I would love to move to the level that the Dog Brothers are at. But, I am learning to crawl now. Why not wear at least a bag glove to prevent this? Incidental hits can put us out of the game for awhile. It may be during the time that we are "off" our game that we meet a situation wherein we realy need to be with it. I've always hated inuries of any type (hey, during 30+ years of activity I've sprained, strained, and dislocated a lot, incl. my brain :-) ... can make ya feel a bit more vulnerable until back on track, yah? I don't understand training without some always-present minimal protection. I now train with just a few private students and/or my wife. Minimal protection = mouth guard for hubad/kuntao drills. Why? because iot doesn't take much to lose the surface(s) or cusp(s) from your teeth. Why damage yourself irreversibly while training skills intended to provide freedom from damage? In my hard kung fu days we trained without protective equipment. No gloves, no mouthguards, just a cup. Crazy, yes!!! If I could go back I woudl suggest at least light eye/face, throat, chest/ribs, kidneys (we had people urinating blood after class sometimes), as well as hands and shins ... cups/groin protection for both males and femmes. I have two students who bruise easily. Aside from dietary suggestions/recommendations, I require that they wear thin football gear on forearms and elbows, and socker shin guards for the above-mentioned drills. Doctor Fung, toss in some comments re: dental protection? I think that it should ALWAYS be in place during ALL training. Today I even begin to wear a light (upper only) mouthguard during solo (heavybag) practice. I jar my own jaw sometimes while partying with the heavy bag ;-) Mitakuye Oyasin. -mik __________________________________________________________________ McAfee VirusScan Online from the Netscape Network. As I know all the people who have added to this string have a valid point, I must answer the question posed by Nat:- As often as you like. The thing about training full contact nowadays with little or no armour is that it is unnecessary. It is also a very fun thing to do. I think you'll find that it is completely unnecessary to train in Eskrima/Kali/Arnis or Silat nowadays as a gun will do most of the work for you. We do it because we like it. To each and every member of this forum there is a different aspect of FMA that appeals the most. Some, like myself prefer the danger related adrenaline rush of going toe to toe with limited protection. Some like the rush of sparring in armour. Some don't like to spar at all. It's entirely the prerogative of the individual. As for being prepared for an altercation, The confidence of sparring without armour has given to me means that I know that I can handle myself if some scumbag decided to have a go at myself or my family. I know what hurts and what will stop someone, and the difference between the two. And I've done it under pressure, when someone is trying to do exactly the same thing to me.
