It was in Metro Manila in the old gym of Ernesto Presas on Quezon Boulevard in Quiapo in October 1983. GM Mateo Estolloso, a practitioner of Abanico Largo among other styles, was in his mid 70ies. He could hardly walk by himself and had to be assisted by younger persons when crossing the street. But when he picked up a stoick, everything was there: His stance was very low, he moved with grace and attacked me so smothly, so that I thought another person stood in front of me. When he put down his canes, he was again the old man. I am glad that I had the chance to experience this by myself. Absolutely AMAZING. Best regards from Germany Dieter Knüttel Datu of Modern Arnis PS, did you answer Alfred regarding ther FMA-Festival in March 2004 in Dortmund, Germany yet? --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "LOUIE VELASQUEZ" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Manong Cacoy Canete Seminars? The first time I saw the latest Star Wars, in the scene when Yoda fights the bad guy and is bouncing all over the place, I was laughing my ass off, I told my wife something to the effect of "Sh^T!!! He must be Filipino!!! I remember watching Gm Remy Presas, sometimes when he was just walking around, he had this almost Redd Fox ( Fred Sanford ) type of walk, looked like he couldn't do the mile in 4 Hours!! put a stick in his hand and poof instant Yoda! Seriously Remy in his late 50s and early 60s could still close on a person faster than anyone I have ever trained with. GM Wally Jay once said Remy could close the gap on a person every bit as quick as Bruce Lee, which when you look at the size difference is damn impressive, and GM Jay doesn't say things just to here himself talk!! When I first ran into him, I thought he was just some little old guy who worked there (I should point out that he was about 80 at the time, and had recently had surgery). But when he put on his gi and started teaching, it was as if the years dropped away. Not that he was doing aerial falls or anything, but his movement, timing, and footwork were as crisp as you'd expect from a guy half his age. I hope I'm still moving that well when I'm that age. Hell, I hope I _make_ it to that age. :-) Tom -- ================================================================= Tom Valesky - tvalesky@patriot.net - http://patriot.net/~tvalesky --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Vincent Bollozos" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 23:17:27 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Ilustrisimo knee attack Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Leo wrote > >Question: Does Kali Ilustrisimo have techniques > >against lowline attacks to the knee, either from a > >standup fighting position or a sudden diving > >crouch/squat just like Eric Knaus does in the "Real > >Contact Stickfighting" One of the knee attacks I learned in Ilustrisimo was almost identical to the"Derobrio knee attack" in DB tape "Combining stick and footwork". Which was 1) fake the highline attack the knee instead 2) as the attack passes the knee pull the weapon vertically back parrying and retaliation strike the opnnent might do 3) then recounter with a strike to the head. It can be taught in a simple 2 man 6 count drill that covers the knee attack, counter and recounter. I learned this from Master Christopher Ricketts but I believe Master Tony Diego developed the drill.
