I am starting to dive into the internal aspects of the MA's now. Time to heal all the crap I broke. What is the cost of hotel rooms in Dortmund? One of my students will be coming, and she speaks German very well - she's already warned me that she intends to state the I've offered to fight all of the instructors!!!! THIS IS NOT TRUE!!!!!! ;-) Bill --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Thu, 09 Oct 2003 18:51:39 -0400 From: Buz Grover To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Stick 'n Knife Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Given the scenario of a 30" stick or a K-bar type knife I'd have to go with the stick for several reasons: 1. Range. It lets me dish out pain from a longer distance. I don't want to close with some dirtbag; he might bite. 2. Saving pieces of seconds. I can land my hand just about anywhere on a stick and start swinging, in reverse grip if need be. The guy going for the knife has to land on the handle just so, and make sure the blade is oriented in a useful manner before he can start cutting. Do it wrong and you end up lopping off your own fingers or grabbing a fistful of blade. 3. Corollary of #2: be there first with the most. It's a combat situation, there's an adrenaline dump, palms are sweaty, things seem to be moving in slow motion. In situations like this, the fewer variables one has to worry about, the more likely one is to succeed. With a stick you don't have to think about blade orientation, blade length, about whether the blade is double edged, or if the damn thing is sharp to begin with. You can just go primal, throwing big shots knowing your opponent is going to have to come to you to use his weapon. I don't like K-bar type knives because of the round handle: there is no tactile clue telling you how the blade is oriented. I can get a surer shot on target from longer range more quickly with a stick than I can with a K-bar. 4. Fine v. gross motor control. Knives require fine motor control, something that can flee after an adrenaline dump. A stick lets you keep it simple, stupid. With that said, there are probably many on this list who could carve the preamble to the constitution on my hindquarters as I raised the stick for my first strike. I don't claim that any of these points are universal truths, only that they make sense for me and my game. Just put it in your hand and box as usual. -Nat __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Natahey All! Someone posted the q on stick or knife in a room, only one choice, yada yada yada: My q: What??? No handbag fulla quarters??? (My weapon of choice)... a glove wid a brick in it is just as good... OK: Being an ancient geezer I would go for the knife, mainly cause a edged weapons require less strength/effort to do damage, and along the lines of what the other poster said where he'd rather deny the enemy the use of the knife... Postulate to the original query: Assuming the terms of the original query, but replace the "knife OR stick", what if there were an infinite number of weapons (non-ballistic) available, which would you go for? Only one to a customer...and then yada yada yada... Take Care and God Bless! tenrec tenrec@avcorner.com jtenrec2@yahoo.com tenrec2@yahoo.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
