I read an interview with Laci Szabo > > at realfighting.com and he doesn't like folders either. So folders seem > to be > > out of favor with certain sectors of the knife fighting world. > > What are the reasons given? Here's my understanding of the down side to folders. 1) Blade to handle length ratio. A folder must have a handle longer than the blade. So, to get a big folder you have to have a big handle. Average person needs a 4" to 5" handle. My Cold Steel voyager has a 5" blade and a 6" handle. My Spyderco Fred Perrin bowie had a 5" blade and a 4.25" handle The Spyderco is shorter overall with the same amount of edge. My favorite folder (Emerson Commander) has a 5" handle and a 3.75" blade. And it's a pocket full. Most folders are small. 2) Lock failure. You see this argument all the time. It may be nullified by modern locking mechanisms. I certainly have some liner locks that make me nervous. They're really thin and barely engage the blade. On the other hand the Camillus Cuda Maxx folder has a frame lock that is stronger the tighter you grip the handle. Columbia river has the LAWKS system that's supposed to make the knife into a virtual fixed blade. 3) Concealability There's no doubt that you can conceal a folder better than any fixed blade of the same overall size. So folders have an edge there. But the trend with "tactical" folders is to wear them clipped to the top of a front pants pocket. This makes them easier to access and more importantly you can carry a bigger folder comfortably because sometimes as much as a fourth of it is sticking out the top of your pocket. If you're worried about LEOs or girlfriends (Mark) the "clip on tactical" is a hassle me now sign. Personal experience, I carried my Cold Steel Voyager for a while cause I liked the size (it's big). I eventually migrated to the Emerson because it felt better in the pocket. Of course I had it clipped to the right front pants pocket for all the world to see. ( It sticks up 1.25" above my pocket. including the clip there's 3.25" visible) 4) Misc Handle failure - Probably not going to happen. But some of these zytel handle flex alot. Won't open - This could happen and for a bunch of reasons. Dirt, bent from use (prying), fumble fingers (under stress), etc... I just reread this and it sounds like I hate folders. I don't hate them, I like and carry my folders. I'm guess I'm just contrasting them to fixed blades. My current favorite knife is the Spyderco Fred Perrin bowie. It's smaller than Thompsons criteria so it probably falls in the marginal boot knife category. It's really light, great handle ergonomics, and a nice sheath system. Worn horizontally in the small of the back it's easily concealed by untucking your shirt, or with a light overshirt. Cell phones really helped us here. If people see a small bump under your shirt their first assumption is cell phone. The tec lock mechanism can be removed and the knife will slip in a front pocket. In a pair of deep pocket baggy shorts it's invisible. And I think it's more comfortable than my Voyager in the pocket. During the summer in Arizona (which is half the year) I wear baggy shorts and an untucked shirt. I can hide the Fred Perrin bowie almost anywhere in that gear. Fighting knives (dbl-edged blades, etc.) don't go over well in civilian self defense cases before judges, juries, and possibly an arresting LEO. Likewise large knives which may be AGAINST THE LAW. This is why I no longer carry anything fancy, and I only periodically clean my carry knife, e.g., I let it carry some dust and lint to move perceptions in a desired direction. A squeaky clean, daily-honed razor sharp made-for-kombat battle blade will make it very evident that the user is preoccupied with the d___ed thing, probably one-a-dem fanatics, yah? You know what I mean. I recall listening to a colleague rant and froth at the mouth about the beauty and engineering of his fastest assisted opening latest thing that he was so pleased to carry ... and he didn't even hear me when I said "YEAH, AND IF YOU USE IT YOU'RE GOING TO JAIL. YOUR FAMILY CAN COUNT ON ME TO HELP YOUR WIFE AND YOUR TWO LITTLE GIRLS WHILE YOU'RE ON VACATION BUBBA." His excitement over his latest martial find (knife skills) was fueled by his lakc of other fighting ability. Thrilled with the idea of being able to bolster his inadequate emptyhand skills by cutting someone with his spiffy combat knife, he was dumb-blind to the probable aftermath ... jail time. A true "Walter Mitty" (software exec druggie) he was out of touch with the realities of the street, the laws, and the courts. Enuf sed. My pref = what the law mandates, low profiled, basis of usage for all tools of this type. IMHO, better to use something goofy-looking and not too expensive, not the biggest, baddest, most high-tech killing implement we can find. Combat blades have one purpose, especially in the minds of prosecuting lawyers and juries, yes, no? Mitakuye Oyasin. (7 guys lightning scientific, 1 kalis ilustrisimo (me), 2 ladies from modern arnis). while in chungju i met and watched these 7 unique if not eccentric guys from new zealand presenting "matarua" the traditional martial art of the maori tribesmen. they went barefoot & wore g-strings (really no kidding he he) and painted their entire bodies and used long 5-6ft integral hardwood weapons called "mau rakau" which they wielded with the flat paddle-like thing on top & the spear point at the bottom. the maori people value superstitious rituals before their demos. they wore necklaces of carved bone, wood, stone trinkets which they appropriately call "little treasures". this "matarua" art represents the importance of maori culture and spirit. if you ask me, imho they were haka as far as the real thing was concerned. and i do believe that the demo they did was their war dance ritual in its completeness as well as martial arts techniques. i was impressed and quite intimidated too - short of a cross between wondering if they really mean to eat you (as in cannibalism), just part of the show or its just plain wild man crazy when they go into costume (g-string and paint)! after all what would you call going barefoot on asphalt streets parading 10kms or so and doing demos near naked save for a loincloth while everyone chills out on a drizzling day all the while keeping a fierce grimace and an ill-eat-you-for-dinner look in the eyes (remember those pro wrestling guys?). dont get me wrong, our team was with them on the bus to and from several destinations in korea as well as to our last day to incheon airport and they're really the nicest friendliest fellows w/o makeup and weapons on, sharing songs, jokes, laughs and offering the ladies seats & helping with the luggage - all that stuff. hope this info helps. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE A > DEBILITATING FIRST STRIKE UNABATED, then you can go to any kind of fight. > :) > > > Dave Dave, Is depend who is teaching this words. This is work only to those people in business minded, that laid your proposal bigger than small, bigger proposal big profit, small proposal small profit. I heard this many time, in Business analogy of the Hotel. But to used this word for Martial arts, Spicifically Filipino Martial Arts, I dont know what is your instructor told you about weapon. You might need to re-evaluate the goal of your training. Just a piece of thought, between small and big knife. Big knife, positively can cut dipper, longer reach, and penetrates dipper. Negatively: noticeable, telegraphic, and easier to disarmed than smaller knife. Small knife, Positively can cut quicker, not noticeable, easy to applied the techniques, hard to dis-arm, non-telegraphic slash, and uncontrollable cutting power. Negatively: short reach, shallow penetration effect. But all in all both knife has the capacity to disable any opponent small, big, short and tall, fat and tin man and women or it. The point the matter is how would you use the weapon that you have first. That reminds me of the incident experience of my Father back on the late 70' a Philippine Constrabulary Surgent, told my father that the only "Katapat" (matched) to Arnis is his gun. At that time, my father is a Barrio Councilman teaching Baranggay Police in our area. My Father stood up and a matter of second my Father assault the surgent with punch, kick, applied lock into fretzel and telling him to go ahead and get his gun, while he is lock-up. This incident is a simple example of lesson to those practitioner of being narrow minded, look the big screen picture of Filipino Martial Arts, or look outside the box my friends not only what is inside the box. In final, as FMA'rtist we encourage our student train hards and train hard to all sizes of weapon and off-course if possible get used to fight weapon less, less chances to kill someone by accident. If you know your stuff, its really does not matter if you have small knife of big knife. Remember train hard fear is your hardest enemy. The four allegedly knocked at the door of an apartment in the central town of Empoli on Friday night and overpowered a hair-dresser, her assistant and a 28-year-old acupuncturist. But the accupuncturist managed to free himself, seized a knife from one of the aggressors and delivered a series of lethal stab wounds, investigators said. One man was found stabbed in the heart and sprawled on the staircase while another was bleeding to death in the street from a wound to his leg. A third man was recovering from a punctured lung. Magistrates were seeking to establish whether the 28-year-old's self-defence constituted an excessive use of force. -Guardian" --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
