What about Portugal? Portugal was as much influenced, or even moreso influenced by Moorish culture as was Spain. Prior to the withdrawal of the Moors from Northern Spain, the entire country was controlled by the Moors. Did they leave a mark on Spanish martial methods? Mitakuye Oyasin. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Been off line and catching up on the threads. GM Ramiro Estalilla uses sythetic sticks, as does Sigung Ed Bansuelo. The sticks that we use are, I believe, delrin. We use primarily white sticks, thought Sigung Ed, myself and a few other students have some denser (read heavier) black delrin sticks. We use 1.5" diameter white delrin, typically 60 inches long as a shield staff (bankaw). We also have 36" long, 1" diameter black delrin sticks for some largo mano work that we do in Kabaroan. Also use 30" sticks for some solo and doble baston work. Lastly, we use 18-20" sticks for some Serrada work. We do all drills, anyos (forms) and light sparring with synthetic sticks. Of the two types sticks that we generally use (white and black), the white sticks are not as slippery as the black. Fore some reason, I found them to be very slippery especially when your hands get sweaty. I solved this with black electrical tape spiral wound on my sticks for enhanced grip and tactile feel. Our sticks are much heavier than rattan and will destroy a set of rattan in short working order. What I find nice about the sticks is that you need to build up to using them but once accustomed, you can readily increase your speed AND power when transitioning to rattan. One must definately loosen up or will end up hurting yourself. I find that the less dense white sticks absorb shock better than the denser black. Again, we use them for your siniwalli drills - baston, bambollia, and binankaw, for our anyos (Basic 12, Form A, B,...General Tiradin...) and for our light sparring - Basic 12 Advance and Retreat. Obviously we start slow for form and little power, gradually increasing to a comfortable level. If anyone is interested in what they look like, you can see some in the images at: http://www.kabaroan.com/_wsn/page5.html. I also have a few images at http://groups.msn.com/AManansala/kabaroanseminar20030726.msnw. I will try and get in touch with Sigung Ed and find out where he gets the sticks from. Are there any of his people lurking here? Crafty Dog __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
