Having absolutely no background in Western style fencing, modern or otherwise, I was wondering whether, apart from comparing movements, we could also compare the terminologies of both styles. For example, in Kalis Illustrisimo, you find a term such as estrella, which literally means star and which refers to the star shape created when your weapon and the opponent's weapon cross. Another is cruzada, sometimes spelled crossada. Are there comparable terms in Spanish fencing? Since so many Spanish terms are used in the various kali/arnis/eskrima styles, are there other comparable terms that exist in Spanish fencing? If so, what are they? If indeed we can compare the terms and the movements they describe, we may be able to determine something of the influence of the Spanish MA on Filipino kali/arnis/eskrima. Anyone out there familiar with the terms used in Spanish fencing and able/willing to compare them with the Spanish/Spanish-derived terminology in kali/eskrima/arnis? Pardon my confusing question, the English she is so hard to speak :-) Bot __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Ive been aware over the last couple of years of this process and finally a nice simple explanation came my way. It references the current Rugby union World Cup that's taking place in Australia So I thought I would share it! ; ) Recovery has become a bit of a buzz word over the past few years. Teams and physios are always looking for the best methods to help sportstars recover from their gruelling training sessions as quickly as possible. Rugby teams use massage, stretching sessions, relaxation therapy, steam baths, yoga and swimming to help their players overcome stiffness. But the recovery method which has become the choice (and curse) of the players is the ice bath. You may ask why athletes bother jumping into an ice bath after a match when all they want to do is rest with a few cool drinks and a massage. The reason lies behind what the cold, icy water does for a sportsman after a hard day at the office. To understand how the ice baths work though, we first need to understand what recovery is all about. In simple terms, it's about helping the muscles, tendons, bones, nerves and all the different tissues used in sport recover from their workout. Just like Michael Schumacher's car needs a complete overhaul with new parts and tyres after a Formula One race, the body needs to service itself and its parts for the next day, next race or next match. The body does this with the help of the blood vessels that bring oxygen to the tissues and remove the waste products of exercise, the most common being lactic acid. Too much lactic acid build up can cause the muscles to function poorly and over a long period of time feelings of fatigue, heavy legs and general tiredness can set in. So how do ice baths help to boost the body's recovery processes and prevent injury? When you get into an ice bath for five to 10 minutes, the icy cold water causes your blood vessels to tighten and drains the blood out of your legs. After 10 minutes your legs feel cold and numb. So when athlete gets out of the bath, the legs fill up with 'new' blood that invigorates his muscles with oxygen to help the cells function better. At the same time, the more blood coming into the legs will have to leave as well, draining away and at the same time taking with it the lactic acid that has built up from his match. With the Rugby World Cup, most of the players will be taking ice baths regularly after training sessions to help their muscles stay fresh and avoid injury. Recovery or torture? Try it out for yourself and decide! --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "norm rayos" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 23 Oct 2003 17:09:39 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] synthetic sticks Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, Since everyone is talking about synthetic stick, i guess I should mention that I have some for sale... I tink there was an endorsement by Burton Richardson stating the sticks were able to absorb some of the impact. Any body have a set that could comment on them??? Sigung Ed Bansuelo gets sticks for his school (Warriors of Righteousness) and for Grand Master Ramiro Estalilla from Interstate Plastics (www.interstateplastics.com). 1.800.742.3444. Please see their website for their locations. The saleperson that I spoke with informed me that they will ship to other states; you can also order on line. The two products that we typically use are Delrin(R) which we get in black, and UHMW, a polyethelene based product, which we get in white. I find the UHMW product better at controlling reverberation from full strength strikes. My wife just asked me what I want for Christmas, and I want what I asked for last year: a subscription to Filipino Martial Arts Magazine. Well, the problem is that she GOT me a subscription last December and I have yet to see an issue. I emailed its publisher Eliot Shearer this summer explaining that I never received the product that we paid for, but I never heard back from him, either. He DID, however, do us the service of quickly cashing our check. I had hoped to get all the back issues as well, but I'm afraid of ordering them and losing more money to a crook. What should I do? Call the BBB? Just chalk it up to a lesson learned? Any ideas?
