But I began to see  that this art is evoluating every year and like bjj martial artist are  directed toward this art, why?  I would like to know from you how much this art is effective in the  street, in hand to hand?  and about weapon do you think there is other styles which are better in  weapon (stick and knife) than FMA.  last question, do you think if someone study FMA alone he will be a  complete streetfighter or he should study style like hapkido,  kenpo,taekwondo,...plus FMA to be a complete streetfighter?  thanks in advance  gaby   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Protect your PC - Click here for McAfee.com VirusScan Online --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2003 10:10:12 -0500 From: Joaquin Torres To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Is FMA effective Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Gaby, Personally, I don't feel there is any one system that will make anyone a 'complete' streetfighter, so I'll leave that question alone. I've known a few people who have successfully used FMA in self defense situations. As to whether or not it would be effective hand-to-hand, that would depend on the individual artist and his/her instructor. In general, all FMA have the /potential/ of being effective empty hand arts, but it will depend on that aspect being covered in training and how well an FMA practitioner can use that knowledge. The majority of the weapons work trained in the FMA are very effective in my opinion, and the general weapon training is valid in modern times (i.e., no katana, nunchaku, sai, spears, and other weaponry not likely found on people walking the street). Granted, many FMA systems train sword techniques, but these are easily transferred to the stick, and are in fact often trained with sticks rather than swords. For bladed weapons, particularly knives, I feel there are extremely few systems better. However, all of these are personal opinions. As with ANY martial art, effectiveness ultimately depends on the individual employing that system. Basically, can YOU make it effective. For example, at my level of training, I doubt I could make a Korean system effective on the street, but I know of people who can. I think the best answer I can give you is to find an FMA club in your area and give it a shot. Agreed. It may be a Spyderco thing. I think Janich is the newest teacher "approved" by them. A few years back it was a HwaRang Do (Hapkido) guy, Eric someone. >From what I understand from those that saw both instructors, Eric did a better job.
