Quite a few years ago my wife and I had a table at the Oregon Knife Collectors' show. A burly, bearded Hwa Rang Do player named Eric was doing a folding knife demo. Could they have been the same person? His stuff looked like solid basics, but nothing special. Tiel tried to call him out when he said that all Guru Inosanto had was "a few flashy stick moves". He declined the invitation. [He declined the invitation, by the way.] --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "RJ Sison" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 01 Nov 2003 16:16:59 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] (no subject) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Gaby, It all depends on what Kali, Arnis, Escrima system you are in, some emphasize only on one aspect, such as systems that emphasize only on knife or only on sticks and so forth. I myself train in Rutano Estokada Kali here in Calgary, Alberta in Canada, and my instructor Punong Guro Dan Rutano have a very interesting way at looking at martial arts. In our system, we train everything and spend equal amounts of time on each one. With weapons we train double stick, single stick, stick and knife, double knife and single knife. Then we train in Panuntukan/Sikaran (kickboxing) which includes elbows and knees, along with what we call "destruction" which most FMA practitioners know as "defanging the snake". We also train in grappling, which in Filipino is called buno or dumog, our particular system is called "Haribon Dumog". The interesting thing about this is that we don't get ANY of this from any other styles of martial art. Most FMA styles say that they have to take from other martial arts to complete or round out their system, they don't see that the motions and angles in the weapons are all transferable to the punching and kicking and in the grappling, whether standing or on the ground. This reply is long enough so I'm not going to go into more details. But the point is that the FMA is a COMPLETE system, it depends on the system or instructor if they understand the full meaning of the movements in their system to translate it into striking and grappling. As for effectiveness, which other martial arts system trains a weapons as much as FMA. If you get attacked in the street, that most dangeous is the attack with a weapon, and the most common weapon...knife, and whcih other martial art trains knife as much as FMA. If you train muay thai or tae kwon do or hapkido or whatever, you know for a fact that the majority of training will be on striking. Try it for yourself with any training background you have other than FMA, ask a partner you trust to come at you with even a training knife, but with full intention of cutting or stabbing you, see how many times you get cut or worst yet get stabbed. As for BJJ, the large mount of time is spent in grappling, close quarter. Try to get in close, as in grappling, with somebody who has a knife with the full intention of hurting you...get the picture, a knife less than an inch away from your body. Sincerely, Robert Sison Rutano Estokada Kali/Haribon Dumog _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. I've talked to him on the phone, but never met him. My comments are only based on what some LEO friends/students said that had the opportunity to see both teach.
