I've seen guys who practice some of the supposed "unrealistic" arts who seem to have a little something you may not want to mess with. I paraphrase a quote from a source I can't recall: "The price of of overestimation is nothing, the price of underestimation can be death." Food for thought. My experiences with tear gas(CS ad CG) and pepper spray both as a volunteer tester and as a user for the latter in the field leads me to believe they are tools with limitations. Despite its effects on me, pepperspray has NO effect on SOME people. Tasers however, are a different kettle of fish. I am asuming(a very dangerous thing) that the taser has accurately hit its target, the electrodes have penetrated and secured themselves, and the current can travel unbroken to its subject. Once the circuit has been closed, the impact is debilitating. I've seen a dozen big/little/tough/aggressive/resisting/running men and women dropped in the blink of an eye with no chance of being able to resist its effects. The other earlier mentioned 'less lethal force options' above were difficult to overcome and fight through, but not prohibitive like a taser. If you were to now threaten me with a Taser, you will get the utmost compliance in return. I'll gladly go a few rounds with empty hands or the weapon of your choice(for some reason I am always open to getting my a** kicked) but I will not risk another taser shot, even under the 'friendly' terms I have faced in the past. If there's is one thing the body remembers in the short term, it's the blow it just took to the body that stoppped it in the tracks that felt like an electricution. The worst part is that the only thing affected is the muscles close to the surface. Therefore it should work on anyone if it is properly discharged and secured, the worst part is that your mind is thinking clearly about the searing pain you are undergoing, but you are powerless to stop it. All your surface muscles between the electrodes contract and you lose voluntary conrol over them; the feeling is intense and overwhelming. It certainly ain't no party trick: not my idea of a party, anyhow. I would rate his skill as high. He first used a 10 foot whip, then a 6 foot whip. Upon reflection after this experience, he worked on his 4 foot whip and put a knife in his left hand and calls his system "Latigo y Daga". A couple of years ago he published a booklet on this system. A couple of observations: 1) He was fighting Top Dog in his prime. 2) It was an open field. TD could easily move until the time of his choosing. 3) Before the match, ALL of us where concerned for TD-- except TD who was quite confident. Its easy to say "Of course" after the deed. My son Conrad and I visited Tom a couple of months ago while on a road trip up north. He is well, and has developed quite a deadly game with a sling (as in David and Goliath) and is playing drums in a local band. Conrad thought it was very cool to play his drums and Tom was kind enough to say he had talent. :-) Woof, Crafty Dog --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 10:18:59 -0500 From: Steve Ames To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Tasers Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net On Wed, Nov 05, 2003 at 10:35:11AM -0330, Paul Woodruff wrote: > subject. Do you remember the make and model of the Taser that you experienced or saw in use that had this effect? -Steve --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 10:29:57 -0500 From: LUNGHSING@aol.com To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] tasers Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, I've spent the last 25 years as a police officer and I can remember when tasers were first introduced. I was in a training class and they offered $10 to anyone who would take a hit ( this was the 80's). Ten whole dollars? free? I was in! I distinctly remember getting hit and collapsing to the ground. I never really lost conciousness but the world seemed far away and I had lost control of my own body. I kind of "came to" just prior to losing control of my bladder ( which, had it occurred, would have followed my like a pair of soiled depends the rest of my carreer. Hell, some of my zone partners would probably have etched it onto my tombstone). They then offered me $50 to take a second hit and I offered them the one finger salute as I stumbled back to my chair. Later, as a Sgt., I had more than one occasion to use the Taser and results varied. Some people hit the ground, curled into a fetal position and whimpered like a baby. I distinctly recall one guy who ripped the darts from his chest and charged us ( toxicology later revealed that he was on PCP). One valuable lesson learned by a neighboring PD was that MACE ( which used an oil base) and the taser was not a good combination. Can you say human torch? Fortunately, OC spray uses a water base. Just lately we've gotten the X26 model taser. it looks like a sci-fi raygun. A freind of mine, Randy ( SWAT team leader) was assigned one. In the school, they had to self administer a contact shot to the thigh. Randy says he still has the scar. Randy took that thing out on every call, just waiting for an opportunity to use it( It does look pretty cool). When he took it out on a traffic direction post I thought it was a bit much but he said that he might have to use it on an unruly pedestrian. Jaywalking is no laughing matter ( just kidding ;) ) . The first time he did get to use it was on a domestic call. The suspect confronted us in a dark hallway, screaming at us to get out of his house ( you could hear the wife crying in the background). He was shirtless and very sweaty because, apparently, beating a woman is the hardest work he'd done for a while. I just stepped to one side because I knew without looking that Randy had the taser out. When the darts hit him, he lit up like a christmas display. For about 5 seconds, blue strands of electricity played across his torso and he hit the floor. A couple of seconds later, Randy lit him up again for about 5 seconds and we watched the show. I looked at him and Randy just shrugged " I thought I saw him move". Hope that helps. PS, the civilian models are worthless and will probably just piss off whoever you use it on, but they are fun at parties.
