It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote. It is the VETERAN, who salutes the Flag, who serves under the Flag, ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM. I was out to lunch with a friend of mine who is a veteran. As we were eating he made a trip to the buffet line and on his way back he stopped to talk to a table of men in uniform. When he got back to our table he stopped our waitress and told her that he would pay for their meal. This was a small gesture but this may have been the only thanks these brave men ever get. Wouldn't it be nice if this became a usual thing to do instead of an unusual thing to do. Thank you to all you vets out there. Wayne Watkins Director Technical & Career Ed. Woof, Crafty Dog ====== RE: Stick vs Whip in Dog Brothers Tape The fight that subscribers have been referring to was between me and Tom Meadows. As some of the readers noticed, when going against the 10' whip, it was like jumping rope - knowing that Tom had to keep it moving, I waited for it to pass and then charged behind it. The 6' whip was another story and in the tape you will see that he is able to put me on my heels with a barrage of high speed strikes - it was only after he took an extra half beat to reload did I have an opportunity to disrupt his weapon and close. The most glaring weakness of the whip was that once breached, it was practically useless - I think this would also be true whether the handle was 18", 24" or even longer. Consequently, after the first exchange, the protocol was that once I closed , we would stop and begin again. I was not too worried about the 10' whip because it took too long to generate a strike plus you can see it coming well in advance - it struck me as something you would use while on a horse or elevated more than our circumstances allowed. The most impressive thing about it though was while circling him, I could feel the puffs of air as he cracked it 2' or so in front of me to keep me at bay. I really enjoyed the shorter weapon because it was very fast and dangerous. The shorter the whip the faster it goes, however, if I were to use one in combat, I'd make sure to have a good knife in my off hand. Tom and I are a pretty good friends and we approached this "match" like two scientists in a lab looking for the essence of our respective points of view. It was certainly a great learning exerience for both of us and had bjj not come along, I would have probably pursued the whip myself. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2003 11:17:02 -0800 To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net From: Scott Shebby Subject: Re: [Eskrima] US Marines Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net At 05:50 PM 11/9/2003 -0800, you wrote: Thank you Ray, Semper Fi! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi All, In my whip studies, ive heard few people claim that the handle of a whip could be effectively used as a baton, but no one has managed to sell me on the idea. Is there any video footage out there of these techniques in action. I know it could be argued that you could "just use stick techniques", but having a stick with a 4 - 10 foot length of kangaroo hyde on its end is very different than a piece of rattan with nothing attached to it. Any thoughts? I know about a year or two ago he decided to retire since he was having a lot of knee problems and he didn't want to be just another sideline Eskrima Master. Anyway, did he remain retired or has me made a come-back??? Come-back is the response I'm hoping to hear... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
