Also, as I previously mentioned, he has been playing with the sling too with some interesting results. I currently teach FMA and was recently invited into a karate school where there was nothing really but a kids program. It was very hard to come up with a curriculum that would allow these kids, between the ages of 9 and 12, to learn FMA without them being "dangerous". So do this the choice was made to teach them stick only at first, along with empty hand and dumog. While doing this they had to endure classes that were mostly lecture and demo - My partner and I made sure they UNDERSTOOD what this art all about. We drilled them, and rarely let them hit sticks with each other int he beginning. This lead to a large amount of drop-outs, but the kids that were left, and weren't bored to tears by our speeches and demos while they sat and watched, turned out to be some of best students I have! I have progressed a few into some empty hand vs. knife and disarms and let them hit sticks now. They are ready now. I am not one to tell anyone what to do with their kids, but may I suggest that you let your son watch you train and let him drill in the motions only. If he keeps wanting to come back, he may be mature enough to learn. If your son has what it takes to do repetitive footwork drills and swing the stick in the air, or strike a tire for months on end, he may have what it takes in dedication alone to handle learning the arts. Only $0.02 worth. But I think yours is an important question Regards, Jason Nardi -----Original Message----- From: Van Harn, Steve [mailto:Steve.VanHarn@TENNANTCO.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2003 4:31 PM To: Eskrima Digest (E-mail) Subject: [Eskrima] kids in the FMA > I haven't decided yet whether or not I want to have my son train in FMA. > He's 10 now and loves all sports, especially football, and shows a great > ability to pick things up quickly. To my knowledge, he is still in "retirement", though I'm not entirely sure what that means. But thats his business. Regardless, when Tom and I do get together its always fun. I have a great time watching Tom's rapid fire method of cracking the whip. I always get new ideas watching him. Anthony DeLongis' method helps me to understand what Tom is doing despite the fact that their styles are radically different. I feel pretty lucky to have studied with both Anthony and Tom and wish Tom lived closer to me so we could keep trading ideas. This would be agreat help since I am only 1 1/2 hours from here. The skills taught form a perfect basis on which to build later (with other MAs). The fighting techniques "work" for basic schoolyard self-defense, but generally do not lead to nasty consequences (and in the rare case when they do, injuries due to throwing and wrestling type of moves are often *viewed* by the uninformed public, like most school authorities, as accidental - whereas a solid hit to the nose certainly wouldn't be...). The training strengthens and builds self-confidence and is very "natural" for kids, in particular for boys (who tend to wrestle and tumble anyway). Nothing like 20 minutes of Randori to take the edge of a hyperactive child... If the child likes to compete, then Judo will allow it to win many trophies. It will also obtain structured progress rewards in the form of colored belts. Finally, if the child isn't too talented and does not like performance pressure, most Judo instructors are very good at using the "Budo" mumbo-jumbo to make the child feel good about whatever it can do (the way is the goal etc.). I've had trouble finding an insurance provider for martial arts that includes something that would be suitable to Filipino Martial Arts training. All the insurance providers that I"ve looked at here in Hawaii don't include it, well, not any that I've come across anyway. Please email me back privately at split_ends_no_more@hotmail.com. For Guro Crafty Dog, Sayoc Kali people, and anyone associated with the inosanto academy I'm sorry for the double notice. After emailing you guys privately, I realized that the best way to ask this question was to hit the eskrima-digest forum, but that was post-facto. But I would very much appreciate your advice, and the one email replyj to the other email acct. is enough:) Thanks a lot everyone for your advice, -E _________________________________________________________________ >From Beethoven to the Rolling Stones, your favorite music is always playing on MSN Radio Plus.
