Its perfectly ok to train kids in FMA. But you have to know first if the kid has the will and the desire to learn martial arts. You will have to know also if the kid will not have difficulty in absorbing the art and the purpose of the art. It is dangerous to train kids in martial arts if the wrong stuffs are taught to them by the wrong persons. Wrong stuffs I mean are the philosophical rationale of the art itself. You will have to also determine what to teach the kid. It might be dangerous to teach kids the ideologies of bushido especially in the age of 15 below unless ofcourse if the kid is of exceptional intelligence and that he is able to absorb the ideology and recognize what is right and wrong. On the other hand however if things might turn out to be good, the kid will learn discipline and control at an early age and thus will become much more wiser and mature in thought in the near future. I know kids who are taught martial arts at an early age and had a terrible indigestion of the art that they took it wrongfully. You might create bullies instead of stopping bullies. I myself learned FMA when I was 16 or 17 (now I'm 18, still young! HEHEHEHE!) and have already read and learned about bushido when I was still in high-school (furtunately I did not experience mental indigestion of the Japanese philosophy). But if you really feel that you really wish to teach your kid FMA, go ahead and "break a leg" its perfectly ok. Just keep in mind always that you have to always monitor the development of your kid and correct him whenever necessary. And if things turn out nice, then congratulations! You have just created a disciplined citizen. Navarro, Fulbert A. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Protect your identity with Yahoo! But largo mano >style. Then when I had my second boy. It was different he did not like too much of that. He loved the emptyhand stuff. So I concentrated on that interest. When he grew older and saw his older brother doing sticks he did not say it. He looked interested. Now he is learning the stick. But I started teaching him sinawali drills with hands. Kinda like patty cake. So nobody got hurt. This is how I tested his interest. Then we had the twins!(I know lots of kids!). And they were too hyper so I got them into my kickboxing Mano mano mode. Now at an early age of 5 they are now learning the largo mano and medio range of Modern Arnis/Kombatan. I had to ease it in them. So my point is you have to know your childs temperament, atitude, and personality. Let him see watch you train with sticks. See if he might find it interesting. Then show him your sikaran and see his reaction. NOw all 4 boys go to my training partners class to learn Mano mano. So they can experience the joy of interaction. And at the same time so they can learn without me expecting too much. But all in the FMA spirit. But if you'd ask me, I also agree with the judo classes. I would also suggest Brazilian jujitsu. At home I still train them individually and mix it up. Some kickboxing thru Mano mano and some sticks thru our Modern arnis/kombatan mode. Self defense too. Hope this helps, Alex Ercia-Modern arnis/Kombatan _________________________________________________________________ Frustrated with dial-up? I am expecting my first and, of course, I would like to start my child off early in some kind of martial arts. I dont know which would be best for a still developing body. Throws/breakfalls, joint locks, and limb destruction dont seem like a good idea for the soft bones. I have heard some things about some styles making their practitioners stiff as boards and unable to flow. I would appreciate him/her having some realistic movement drilled into him/her from the beginning, without getting the snot beat out of him/her. There are some great Karate schools that have a childrens curriculum that place a heavy emphasis on respectful behaviour. That kind of appeals to me. Hopefully a good kenpo school would fit the bill. Or, maybe Hapkido. hmmmmm. Gord --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Anyone out there played with tomahawks? More specifically, has anyone found a way to train 'em that doesn't risk lopping off pieces of a training partner? Though I've been throwing frontier style 'hawks for several years, but they've always seemed too top-heavy to do any serious hand to hand with. Picked up on a couple of different "Vietnam Tomahawks" lately and like the way they perform against sticks. Destroyed an American Tomahawk Vietnam Trainer is a single session, however, and so am seeking any other training devices that are available.
