Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Bob asks: > What does "destroyed" mean ? You broke the handle? Yep. Did about 30 minutes of pass and hit drills against 26" rattan. Discovered something more than a hairline crack running up 2 sides of the handle along the seam for the length of the handle. Though the contact we made was solid, it was hardly 100 percent, probably more like 50 to 60. Might get a little more non contact training out of it, but it looks like it's a couple hits away from shattering along the handle's length. With that said, learned a lot in those 30 minutes. The underside of the wide face of the ''hawk was great for hooking. Hooked behind my partner's knee a couple times; the reaction was immediate: the knee folded forward. He returned the favor; the fiberglass trainer hurt quite a bit. Don't even want to think about what sharpened steel would do to tendons and such. The blade geometry is such that once something is hooked it stays hooked and gets worked in deeper. Worked okay hooking behind the neck, though it wasn't as solid as behind the knee because of the neck's larger diameter. Hooking over the shoulder worked great, though: sunk right into the scapula and inspired instant compliance. Hooking someone over the shoulder and then pulling him into a dagger held in the live hand seemed a promising technique. The down side is that there is no screwing around in largo: you gotta close or you'll be beat to jelly by a longer weapon. Roof blocks don't cause an opponents weapon to slide off; rather it hangs up on the 'hawk's blade and could lead to a disarm. Same goes for other blocks. If I'm going to get serious about 'hawks I can tell I'll need to play with a couple 14" sticks just to get use to the range and mechanics. Gonna want to be comfortable with a short weapon in close before trying to pull anything off with a 'hawk under conditions resembling combat. Haen" To: Date: Thu, 13 Nov 2003 10:31:17 -0600 Subject: [Eskrima] kids in FMA Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I am not an instructor, but have observed a few, so here are a few ideas, take them or leave them. First of all, the school I train at is run under the Inayan system of escrima. We do a good amount of Kadena de Mano, starting out empty before we move onto knives, then sticks and so on. We also use concepts from Jujitsu, and Tae Kwon Do, to get a fuller range of training, learning grappling, and kicking drills not normally associated with FMA. We have a very good program for training children, starting with a program called "little dragons." We teach the children to come to attention by calling it the "penguin stance," and the learn some basic kicks and strikes with fun names. They get to hit pads held by instructors, and thoroughly enjoy shouting a loud kiay. As they get older, they go into our children's training, which is more along the lines of a Tae Kwon Do school. They learn some katas and flow drills, and work at a higher pace. I should probably add that one of the main focuses for the little dragons and children is respect and safety. The little dragon salute is something along the lines of, "I will clean my room, I will make my bed, I will obey my parents." When they reach their teen years, they are allowed to practice with the adults. By this time you have well structured and respectful young adults to work with, and you can tell the difference between the ones who were children in the program and their friends that just start in their teens. Not only does the training give them discipline, but they are normally healthier, and because of their training, can pick up the Escrima techniques faster. Some of the children pick up this stuff so quickly it is amazing, and makes me feel like a slow old man. I'm 26 by the way. On the whole, I believe that starting children out in a fun, but well disciplined environment and teaching them the basics will lead to a more rounded adult in life and martial arts.
