The chapter on Prof Vee indicates that he trained/studied with Mat Marinas. It's only a figure of speech and I had an idea of who might be the head of this system but kept it to myself. Nowhere in my post did I say that it was a fly by night system. It is quite false for me to say that I "suggested" that it was a fly by night system. Again, it was only a figure of speech with regard to who might be the head of Vee Do Kwan. As it turns out, I had someone else in mind. Friends of mine in NY speak very highly of Danny Paolo and his skills. As it turns out, I'm descended (for the lack of a better term) from another of one of Prof Vee's students and am aware of who Prof Vee's high ranking students are. I also have been studying Remy Presas Modern Arnis intensively in the last few years. Rogers Cooper, his father, Prof Robert J. Cooper, Prof. Thurman Miller, Prof Mike Medina, Prof. David Rivera and Prof Jose Velez). Our branch teaches a blend of Vee JJ '65 and Chung Do Kwan TKD. Prof Vee, knowing that I was going to settle in Ohio after law school, suggested that I seek out arnis instruction. To that end, I have been studying Remy Presas' Modern Arnis for the last few years. I trained with Prof Presas for a few years before his untimely death and continue training under his senior students. In addition, I was just beginning to get a taste of Pa Herman Suwanda's Pencak Silat Mande Muda prior to his untimely death (as he came out to Dayton Ohio three or four times a year). Unfortunately, he died in a tragic car accident. Just two weeks before his death, my Modern Arnis instructor (Guro Dan McConnell) and I approached him and his wife about doing a seminar in Columbus. He agreed to do so and told us that we would work out the details when he came back from the ill fated seminar tour of Germany. Sad. In addition, I met a Filipino arnis instructor who hails from the Cleveland area, who appears to be a very promising avenue for future studies. That's my background. I think that some have overreacted to my use of the phrase "sneaking suspicion." I kept my idea to myself, after all. I have checked out Danny Paolo's website and it looks very impressive. As I stated in another post, I have heard but nothing great things about Danny Paolo. One of my friends did attend Prof Vee's memorial service and told me that Danny had spoken at that service. If so, I can make a very good recommendation. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi, my fiancee's mum is coming over for a visit to Australia. I wonder if I should ask her to bring some Escrima stuff along. Which leads to two questions: 1) What exactly is advantageous to buy in the Philippines? Cheaper, better, only to be had there... 2) Where would you get it? My only visit (which wasn't Escrima-centric at all) to Manila didn't exactly turn up FMA stuff at every corner. Suggestions would be appreciated.
