As far as the FMA studies are concerned, I'm doing just fine in that regard as Guro Dan McConnell and I are on the Board of Directors of the International Modern Arnis Federation (IMAF, Inc.) and have access to training with long time students of Prof Presas. In addition, I attend multiple Modern Arnis camps and seminars all over the country. As far as the silat is concerned, Guro Dan and I would be interested in whatever silat system teaches harimau. That's the aspect of Pa Herman Suwanda's system that we fell in love with. As others have noted on this list, the merging of FMA and Silat is extremely compatible. Miss J, a contributor to this list recently took part in a competition in San Diego, and won Single Stick, Double Sticks and Forms in her age category! Congratulations! I know you had to work very hard to get there. Scott Kinney Amateur Barbarian ********** Dear Scott, Thank you. However, it seems someone rather got some information messed up. The competition was the western regionals for the (i believe) five western state area with the WEKAF. The compation took place in San Ramon Ca November 8th. Both myself and Clark " a co student at the Inosanto academy" went to compete for the academy, Clark took the bronze metal for his division in single stick and double stick. In my division" Senior woman's" I qualified in the frist place slots for Double stick, Single stick and non traditional open forms. This placement sends me to the nationals this up coming March 2004. This year the nationals will be held in Denver co. In Denver I will be competing in the same categories and hoping to at least place in second so I can go on to the philipines for the worlds on the U.S. Team, that are held the summer of 2004. Apparently 35 country's compete in the worlds. As far as how I did this, hell I don't know, I am just this old fat and slow chick that sort of does what ever the hell she pleases, and then seriously thanks the gods that I am still alive. To be honest, I lost points during the form compation because I did not know the proper etiquette when introducing myself. In addition, I have a lot of work ahead of me to be able to compete at double stick and single stick at an elevation of 6500 feet and not pass out in the frist round. All prayers are welcome because to be quite frank, its been a real act of god, that came with a ton of help and patients from my teachers, co students and sparing partners at the academy. Furthermore, it was the frist time I have ever competed in anything in my life. NOTE: At present the full result for the western regional's are posted on the bandalan website, http://www.bandalan.com/2003%20Western%20Region%20Championship%20Winners.htm however there was a mistake on the listing for my placement for single stick and at present it shows it open.. (However, it is being corrected and hopefully will be updated soon and show the placement.) Is your cousin traveling alone? If she is she needs someone to go with who knows Manila. The place to go for sticks and other Martial Arts Stuff in Manila is Quiapo sa ilalim ng tulay (under the bridge). The other place is also in Quiapo but on the same road where the quiapo church is. So if you looking on the front of the church it is the road that runs on the ride sideof it, which is the main road. Walk on this sidewalk and you'll find theme on small alleys and stalls. If you are looking for getting body armor made, gloves and other leather or man made leather stuffs. It is safe in Manila if you are from there and looks like one of us, but once you speaks and fluent English comes out, we know you are not from around there. So there are some Filipino Bugaw (ones who takes advantages of tourists who are not familiar with Manila) these people are parasites and you want to stay away from them the. The problem is they are hard to recognize because they looke just like us and pretends to be helpfull but really they want to rob you face to face on day light. Most Filipinos stare to people with white skin and different colored hair, we don't mess with tourist in Luzon where Manila is. There are places in the Phil. Which are off limits to all tourist, Filipino and non Filipino. You can catch a cab air conditionedto get to Quiapo, but some cab drivers will roam you around to get as much fare from you. You can catch a jeep or bus that says Quiapo on the front, but you'll die of air pollution ridding it. You could catch the train that rides over the streets of Manila north to South but the rails of these are so unsafe you'll never know when it will finally derail itself. The best is have someone you can trust and take you there in a cab. Otherwise and I can give you a contact person you could call in Manila one of my many relatives who can give you a hand while you are there. This is not a business proposition just helping. Hi. A cousin of mine will be travelling to Manila on vacation soon. I'm hoping to send her on a shopping errand to the Squadron Shop for some FMA equipment. Can anyone give me directions on how to locate the shop? The directions should be comprehensive enough to help a first time tourist in Manila locate the place. Also, I'd like to know if the shop is located in a relatively safe area in the city. I don't want my pretty cousin to take any unnecessary risks for my sake. Thanks in advance. ===== Mel peg8109@yahoo.com Penang Malaysia --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
