This is a clear estapol used to protect floor boards. I have used it quiet successfully on two large pieces of bamboo that were given to me. You may need to use a couple of coats to seal the bamboo fibres. Once this is done and dry you can hit the bamboo repetatively with no splitting. The bamboo needs to be dry to do this. Whilst the method is okay it is not as good as the traditional methods. Perhaps someone may be able to give you better advice or better still the traditioal method. It is for anyone interested in buying padded training sticks for full contact training. I study (among other things) Inosanto Blend JKD/Kali at the Bob Breen Academy in London, England. Guru Bob has been studying under Guru Dan Inosanto since 1979, and has a stickfighting pedigree as long as your arm. As an example; after training in the Filipines with GM 'Tatang' (sp?) Illustrissimo, there is now a large photo of Guru Bob in the Illustrissimo Academy. He also taught Neil Mcloud who was 1996 and 1997 world escrima champion (who now concentrates on vale tudo). Anyway... two weeks ago I had my first stickfighting competition. It was full contact, with a boxing headguard, goggles and a gumshield, but (and this is the thing) no gloves! Now, don't get me wrong, my bruises have only just left me, and I couldn't carry the shopping with my right hand the day after, but no broken fingers. The reason for this is the sticks that we used. Guru Bob now sells padded sticks specifically designed for full contact stickfighting. I feel (and I know how you guys like to discuss things) that the sticks are a great way to practice FMA from a (POTENTIALLY) more realistic direction. As I understand it, FMA practitioners like nothing more than to stay completely out of range and then to just 'defang the snake' the first chance they get. Now, if you are not wearing any gloves at all, you learn VERY, VERY quickly to keep your hands out of harms way. The sticks in my view are just right in terms of (for want of a better word) pain. They hurt A LOT (my forearms and triceps changed colour every day for over a week), without risking blindness, broken knees, hands, elbows, fingers and er... head. I have just seen the new Dog Brothers promo clip and Wow it is fantastic! I TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY respect those guys and anyone else who had it in them to turn up and compete. My only (tiny) observation for what its worth, is that with ordinary sticks and gloves, the target may move away from the protected hand to unprotected parts of the opponent e.g.. forearms to inflict damage. Is this move away from the hand-as-target, a step away from the dirty fighting techniques that we all know and love in FMA? If it is the case, then Guru Bob's padded sticks may be a possible solution. They are of uniform width and height (around 1.5 inches by about 28) and in my humble opinion, great for full contact. If you are ever in London, come and see us, or have a look at www.bobbreen.co.uk to see who we are, or sample the TUFSTIX stick: www.fightgear.co.uk Peace and respect to all on the list julian_gilmour@hotmail.com Internet communications are not secure and therefore the Barclays Group does not accept legal responsibility for the contents of this message. I'm currently getting stellar instruction in Kali~Silat, but need to practice one or two days a week with a willing combatant near my area. If you're like me and can't get enough of that burning rattan smell, reply to my e-mail (rmelder@spininternetmedia.com) and we'll hook up. It makes sense that a weapons based system would have this feature. I mean there are a lot of takedowns that can be done with stick, but if you dont want to entangle your primary weapon for a second.... Also, if there is information on this skill could you possibly share some drills/exercises?? I usually use shadow boxing and find this works very well in terms of balance and strength. Timing and distance is another story. Gord --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo!
