And we have a lot of sweeps and takedowns with the feet. But I've also seen some from Kali (though the Kali and Silat tend to overlap a great deal in this area). As far as drills - uggh! I've got some that I was taught and that I use to develop this (both from Kali and from Silat) but I shudder to think of the effort it would take to describe them here. It makes sense that a weapons based system would have this feature. I mean there are a lot of takedowns that can be done with stick, but if you dont want to entangle your primary weapon for a second.... Also, if there is information on this skill could you possibly share some drills/exercises?? I usually use shadow boxing and find this works very well in terms of balance and strength. Timing and distance is another story. Gord --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! I recently bought a pair of kamagongs that had some nasty black varnish as a finish, and promptly sanded it off (not before I blackened my palms after a few swings). The actual wood is about half beige half black pretty much divided down the middle. I know, hard to picture but pretty cool looking. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows a good way to finish kamagong wood, if any different from rattan. It seems to me that it's less pourous, but what do I know. Tail wags for the kind words for our "Promo Clip" (which can be found at www.dogbrothers.com ) Not to get in the way of the plug for Guro Bob's sticks ;-) but a word about the hand as a target in our fighting in response to your very natural observation: In short, the hand very much remains a target. The heaviest gloves we wear are but street hockey gloves. A number of fighters go with batting gloves and the like. The latter gloves qualify as NO PROTECTION AT ALL and serve only to prevent "cheese gratering" and its attendant blood resulting from scraping on the fencing headgear. Occasionally fighters go even without these. For example, in the Gathering this past Sunday True Dog went gloveless and took a substantial hand shot-- a large, colorful welt was apparent as I interviewed him after the fight. His comment was that it really hurt, that he shook it to see if it was broke, and when it wasn't, continued fighting. Even with the street hockey gloves, broken fingers/hands are a typical part of most Gatherings. In part this is because of the substantial sticks we tend to use-- due in part to wanting to have an effect through the headgear. When I was in the Philippines at GT Gaje's camp (1997?) I showed him my fighting sticks and his comment was "What are you fighting? A waterbuffalo?" When our webmaster Bob Burgee returns from his honeymoon he will be putting up on our splash page a nice shot of what a finger can look like when hit. When you see it I think you will agree that the hands remain a highly valid and sought after target in our fighting. Thanks to a heavy background in Sambo and Judo, I find I can apply throws quite well, especially with the knife. My favorite techniques are the outer reaping throw (modified o-soto gari), and various sacrifice techniques (tani-otoshi). I find often in sparring my opponent that they neglect their feet and I can use a simple foot sweep/pickup to unbalance them and drop them. In the last DB Gathering I managed to get two throws, which worked quite well for me. Marc http://www.combative-training.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? There is a student at our Kali club where I help teach in Vancouver, BC, Canada who has started making them for a very reasonable price. He especially likes customizing it based on an outline of your favorite knife/sword design. Great quality for the price if you want a basic, nicely-shaped (and personalized), no-frills trainer. (I'm sure that his prices will increase once the business gets off the ground, but for now, I don't think they can be beat...) You can reach him at Daveevil69@hotmail.com (don't be fooled by the wacky address: he's a real nice and reliable guy).
