The Bahalana men and women use it to great effect. If you ever have a chance to attend one of his seminars you won't regret it. Check out it's prequel, Yojimbo, too. Check the "Notes" section of this page: http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/yojimbo.htm for some interesting factoids about Yojimbo. Also, "Seven Samurai" starring Mifune is excellent. "I hate getting hit in the face. I get hit in the face and I just want to hit them back. I lose my gameplan." IMHO, that right there tells me that he's not a very good martial artist. Getting hit in the face is inevitable - if that's all it takes to throw him then he (a) needs a lot more training and (b) has no business competing to begin with - and never mind thinking about him being able to actually fight. The "reigning champion" that they showed at the U.S. Open made me sick to my stomach with his sensationalistic "sword work." In general it showed more of tournament style "martial arts" and very little of the real deal. Just my own personal rant. Take it for what you wish. But think about this, too: In martial arts, we train to achieve maximum effect with minimum effort. This means that, done well, it looks like very little is happening and, on film, it's going to look completely fake - and (as you point out) it'll be boring. So while we martial artists would really be able to appreciate that, we're not a very big audience and, hence, not a lot of money (comparitively). So filmmakers have to make things big and totally unrealistic just so it's visible on film. The general populace (the ones who really pay the bills for filmmakers) have to be able to follow the action - even if it is fake - or they won't appreciate it at all. Also, most people who don't train and haven't been in a fight don't realize that most fights are over within the first few seconds (even if they continue past for a few seconds past that, they're pretty one sided). That would make for some pretty anticlimactic fight scenes as far as the general populace is concerned. Especially the focus of banned the practices of the art by Spaniards during colonization of the Philippines. Well, during 1600s, this is not applied to the whole country, each Provinces is governed independently by each Archbishop of the Catholic Church. Like in Laguna the Archbishop is located in Pila, Laguna at that time. They are not particularly said that they banned the practiced of the arts of Eskrima, at that time the Filipino art is no particular name, just itak, Tabak, Gunong, Sundang etc. On 1596 they discouraged the Filipino to avoid practice fighting each other (meaning conflict to other Filipino). This is against to all Christian belief, they eventually on 1764 they also banned the practice "Duelo" or duel in Eskrima (which is particular to all practitioner of Fencing). This the history that you will see in many book, there are not mentioning Filipino Arts, just Esgrima, which is Spanish Fencing. This is not myth, this true, and the Filipino Martial Arts is practiced freely in the mountain. Filipino is naturally sport Craze, so even in the mountain, they used to continues the "Duelo" which most of the time the combatant results injury and deaths specially when tempers got out of hand. That why the Authorities banned the practiced of this game. On 1637 the Tagalog provinces adapted the Zarzuela (Spanish stage play) later Filipino called it Moro-moro, which known for the swords play in climax of the show. Arnis was born "harness of the hand" a decorative trapping around the hands of the Moro-moro players or actors/actresses. The so called show the player is necessary to learn basic fencing (Eskrima) and the defensive techniques from the (Estokada) a Bullfighter (Matador) techniques to fight against the charging bulls. Times went by the Filipino adapted this name to the techniques associated to the Moro-moro plays, the Arnis, Arnis de Mano, Eskrima, Estokada is become the most popular name for the Filipino Martial Arts. Among the famous Filipino Eskrimador are Jose Mercado Rizal, studied Arnis in Paete, Laguna 1874 during the time when he is courting Maria Clara (First Gilfriend of Rizal) from Laguna small town Paete. According to G. Jose Caancan a former student of Rizal in Woodcarving, the young Pepe ( Jose Rizals nickname in Laguna) studied the art Arnis to the old man in the name Elias but the last name never mentioned so we cannot confirm if it the same person of the Great Tatang Elias Baet the famous Moro-moro and Doce Pares Arnis organizer in Laguna. In Jose Rizals book he mentioned numerous time the name Elias as his favorite character to his short story. It seems like he is referring this to his maestro Elias in Arnis, Paciano Rizal his older Brother is also noted to the list of Eskrimadores during the Famous Doce Pares in mount Banahaw during Holy week at their times. But again, this is only pass on to me by mouth with my Father and small documented write up in Paete, Laguna history. Myth or no myth the important is the Filipino Martial Arts is alive and well practiced by the Filipino and the non-Filipino around the worlds. Thanks to all Grandmasters who work hard to promotes the arts. Special thank to GM Villavrille, GM A. Cabales, GM Remy Presas, GT Bo Sayoc, GM Leo Gaje, GM Nene Tortal, the Canete's clans of Doce Pares, the Balintawak GM and every single GM that not hesitate to share their arts to us.
