My funds, with a baby on the way and my car being toasted in an accident recently, (with my wife in the car yet!!) are paper thin. Not a substitute for real qualified training but perhaps you could just track down someone with the skill set you want and offer to crosstrain them with what you have. Its cheap and its always good to know another MA addict. -Steve --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Young Forest" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2003 18:42:41 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: cross training martial artists Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >How does the average working guy cross train in various martial styles?? >I dont run my own school and work a 9 -5. Get a copy of the Fighter's Notebook - absolutely a great reference for grappling training. If you are *really* on a budget, download the US Army's H2H manual: http://155.217.58.58/cgi-bin/atdl.dll/fm/3-25.150/toc.htm _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/bcomm&pgmarket=en-ca&RU=http%3a%2f%2fjoin.msn.com%2f%3fpage%3dmisc%2fspecialoffers%26pgmarket%3den-ca --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Leo Daher" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] history channel Date: Thu, 11 Dec 2003 16:01:13 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net What's the name of that show again, and when is it on? I even went to the History Channel's website but couldn't find anything. One thing you may check into is community college physical education classes. Often they will have a high quality instructor teach a martial arts class for college P.E. credit, and a semester class at a Junior College could be a relatively inexpenseive way to cross train. If you don't want the credit you can even possibly sign up as a continuing education student. I was able to do this for a semester with Shihan Nick Chamberlain, for an introduction to Prof. Nick Cerio's Kenpo. Nick Shihan also showed us some introductory BJJ he learned from Carlos Machado. Anyway, think about that as a possible option. Another option may be your local community recreation center. Sometimes they have great instructors giving classes at very reasonable rates. Good luck to you in your search. Ray Purdy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Check out http://www.hockscqc.com/staff/index.htm Some of these guys hold classes once a week or so, and some don't even take any money for it. Find one in your area, and inquire. The track's title is called "Bagong Sayaw" or "New Dance". One of the native instruments used in the song is called a kubing or kumbing which is backed up by some native sounding drums. The pace is fast which makes for a good climactic ending towards the end of anyone's program. Good luck trying to find it though, you might have to buy the cd in the Philippines. Just my two centavos. Best regards, Jose __________________________________________________________________ McAfee VirusScan Online from the Netscape Network. I train in 6 different arts with 6 different people and anywhere from 1 to 8 (depending on the day or group) different people, and I don't pay a dime to anyone. If you get a nucleus of people together and swap knowledge and train on a regular basis that is the best. I am lucky because I already have a 4th Dan, so I can train with people who feel that I am "up to there level" which makes training fun, challenging and educational. We all have our own arts that we have brought to the table and we each show something every time we meet. But we also train from videos and books, if we find something we like. Get people together and train, even if you or they may not know much, learn from other resources, and each other. Just start rolling and working with each other, you can learn a great deal from just that. Attend the occasional seminar if possible, 1 to go to the seminar, 2 to work with new people, 3 make new connections to get more people into your group. If you have experience in an art, place flyers in the local MA shop for training partners that would be willing to "Exchange Knowledge". Or you could try to find a instructor that teaches out of there garage, they usually charge less than a commercial school. I you live in the Las Vegas area you could join one (or more) of the groups that I belong to (after meeting and talking to you of course). Best wishes. Fred C.
