You pay what you have or work for the group. There's always some funky job that needs doing. If you are really serious and want to train that is usually enough. I personally am coming out of 5.5 years of soul crushing debt, even the lady at the bank told us to go bankrupt. Had three kids in a row on one income, 15 cdn an hour for most of it, and then went to school. Still paying my freakin debts. HA. You wanna train, make it happen. Get some tapes, study them ask questions on a forum. Like you did. Don't quit it's harder to get started again. Harder than being motivated. Fat chance you are out here, Abbotsford B.C., but if so email me privately, you could train with us. If you fit you stay, if not well there ya go! I have been wondering how our techniques in the Filipino arts would do using more bulky clubs like cudgels or Irish Shillelaghs, or Indian war hammers... Does anyone know were I could acquire an Irish "Shillelagh" without having to spend $70? Or other clubs like the one's I have mentioned? I reckon you can allow for about 6 interrupted hours each night. That said, you can fit in some training around things: 1. solo training - you might not like it, but you can always train for half an hour on your own and work on the things that you are no good at (that way no one else will know you are no good at them!!!) Chi Gung is great first thing in the morning - say 5am - when someone has just woken you up! 2. exchange training - it has been noted here on the ED that the FMA is like service industry for other martial artists. Lots of black belts in other styles want to learn "sticks", why not trade a bit of your hard earned ability for something else. Over the last year I have learned loads from a guy who teaches Hung Kuen & Wing Chun, so now I have some new cool stuff to mix in and train by myself. A lot of these people own schools etc so have great facilities for a bit of cross training. And it's not going to cost you anything either. 3. less is more - maybe focus on getting really good at 1 or 2 things rather than spreading yourself a bit thin. (That way you have more to trade later on!!) 4. Some stuff is cheap to learn - BJJ may be the in thing, but judo is close, much easier to find, and cheap. What's more, any judo teacher is normally pretty good, because they had to fight for their belt! So get yourself a BJJ video and practise your chosen technique in a judo lesson. Why pay a fortune to learn boxing skills from a JKD guru, when a boxing gym is virtually free and often better (for boxing). Just my 2 pence worth. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello Everyone, I have just been informed and I am pleased to announce that Grand-Tuhon Christopher Sayoc of Sayoc-Kali has promoted Master Ray Dionaldo to the rank of Tuhon. Along with this promotion, Tuhon Ray Dionaldo and Tuhon Felix Cortes have also been tapped to lead Sayoc Fighting Systems. Both the promotion and the appointments took place this last week in England. Sayoc Fighting Systems, which will have its public unveiling soon, has been under development for the last several years. Guro Ray, founder of Filipino Combat Systems, has over twenty years of martial arts experience. He holds numerous ranks and was also a personal student of numerous high ranking FMA instructors, including the late Grand Master Remy A. Presas. He was also one of the first to produce aluminum knife and sword trainers. The announcement concerning his promotion to Tuhon can be viewed at: http://sayoc.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=509& Congratulations again Tuhon Ray!!! Gat Puno, Tom mentioned you told him to use a preparation of vinegar and ginger for arthritis. I was wondering if you could share the method of preparation for this and the quantities used? While I'm on the topic of healing, during the regionals(first fight of course) I took a good shot to the hand. Immediately turned blue and started to swell. I noticed a friend who is also a Kung Fu practitioner, applying Dit Da Jow on his old bruises and asked if I could try a little. Within a 1/2 hour the blue was gone and most of the pain. The hand swelled up and turned light red for a few days but that was pretty much it, almost no pain. There's a small knot on the bone but very little sensitivity. I was amazed. I knew Dit Da Jow helped but I didn't know it helped so fast! Of course as soon as I got home I ordered my own from Wing Lam. Only $10. Got the chance to repeat this week and same results. This stuff is great. How long after an injury will it have an effect if you reapply? Or is it only worth putting on short term. No need to waste it after all. Thanks in advance Gat Puno, Steve Van Harn Arnis Sikaran - Jornales System Sandatahan --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 14:12:38 -0800 (PST) From: Karol Krauser To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re :Cross training Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I personally find one of the best ways to pursue cross training is to find friends and training partners who have spent some time in other arts and play / exchange with them. Its not always we handle this technique this way or that way but looking for universal principles of motion and application. I told my training partner today that a comparison I use is running around the planet with a bag full of food and spices and I find different people to exchange recipes and cook stuff up with...yeah sometimes it tastes terrible but you never know .. I have been fortunate enough in the last few years to be around many people who felt the same way and have wanted to "exchange recipes" As far as the other posting I saw here on the digest in regards to cross training FMA with Brazilian JJ...I think its great! I am moving to Maui next month and my brother there has been practicing BJJ for years and I am very much looking forward to blending the to...I honestly think that Flow is Flow..wether it be on the standing up with a stick and knife, on the ground...or just trying to get through another day in ones life...
