He says he has outgrown all the power struggles that go on in prison.  He objective is to stay fit so he can continue his training and teaching when he comes home.  It is bad that you have had such a bad experience but don't judge everyone by that experience.  He is there for drug use. Books have been bought, websites studied, fellow students contacted and solo training prioritized ( unless the wife goes into labor, Then...:) Thanks for the kick in the butt. Also, I am going to look into doing more leg takedowns for a while, at least until the elbow gets better. There is this young guy in our class and I swear I pop his elbow at least three times a class and he gets right back up. No pain or swearing or mean look on his face. Must be nice. Their positions as correctional officers and martial artists should redefine your request for your sons continued martial arts education. They have given fair alternatives. I am grateful that they have protocols in place to eliminate that type of training in that type of environment. The reasons are obvious no matter the crime your son has committed. I hope you can position yourself to look from more than one view in your request. I did not respond to your request initially after your mention of his age and the situation because I knew there would be more qualified individuals to give heavier input. It doesn't seem as if you are very receptive. Therefore, generally speaking... as a martial arts instructor he is not in the position by any reason to be training with any type of blunt instruments or edged weapons. He has other things he should be addressing at this season in his life. As instructors, this would be a place that we would never wish to see a student of ours go, or start from. Betty, I hope you take this feedback kindly~ and encourage yourself and your son in the alternatives offered here or any other way in life for this season of his life. Heather I am disturbed to hear you mention "he choses his students by what their objectives are"... I hope you understand the magnitude of what you are saying here. > He is doing yoga also. The fun starts thsi Saturday (12/20/03) at 12 noon. Bring snacks and drinks (beer and wine is OK). My address is 2727 Midtown Court in Palo Alto. We will meet at the picnic area next to the parking lot. You can get a map and driving directions from Yahoo. Here's the tricky part: Once you're on Midtown Ct, drive all the way to the end, and turn into the last driveway on the right. Go all the way to the end and park anywhere on the left. See you there!
