You state that he just wants to do his time and come home, well if I had a dollar for everytime an inmate told me that, I'd have a good nest egg for retirement. You may think I am being biased because I am a CO, but I don't believe you can be totally objective being the mother of Bruce. When you state that he said "he has outgrown all the power struggles that go on in prison." This leads me to believe that he has been in for awhile or this isn't his first bit. It also leads me to believe he was involved with the power struggle at sometime in order to state that he is tired of it. I work in a maximum security institution, where prison gangs are a major problem, homemade shanks are a commonplace, stabbings are a commonplace, drugs are the root of the power struggles/violence your son speaks of. The weapons they use to settle these power struggles with is usually the shank. So Betty instead of taking it personally, think about it objectively, do you not think that any responsible instructor would be hesitant to provide you with details on weapons based training drills knowing that they will be passed on to a 38yo inmate doing time on drug offences so he and his buddies can practice them together in prison, just to keep in shape though. You need to give your head a shake, sometimes inmates lie, even to their mothers. There is no reason on God's green earth that your son needs these kinds of drills or training in prison. If he insists on something with a Filipino martial arts flavour to it, perhaps you could send him a copy of the "Escribo" tape that a short clip was previewed on this digest a while back. It is a cross between aerobics and escrima, I think it came from Germany. Some of you guys/gals out there must remember it, maybe someone could forward it to Betty to pass on to her son. Drug crimes may be a social problem or a criminal act, this is an ongoing debate. He did however cross the line. He knew more than anyone else around him what was good for all of us as a society. He was imprisoned, for right or wrong, to be rehabilitated. Until society releases him he has not finshed fulfilling his obligations. As such he has fewer freedoms than someone who has lived in a manner conducive to the "herd" moving forward. Maybe some of the guy's on this list were astonished this would come up, after all their rights and freedoms are more tightly wound into this than most of us here. They might not make it home to babies, wives etc one day. I don't think anyone meant to hurt your feelings, it's just kind of an odd situation. When he has regained his place in society, he will have his rights and freedoms back to some extent. At that time he may choose whatever he likes. You also mentioned he was a competitor previously. This would mean has a body of information to work from at the present time. Repetition of this material would certainly do him no harm In the meantime, running and or weights might be a more appropriate outlet for frustrations and physical fitness. I would be interested in some of the history/symbolism behind the numbers used in the Filipino arts, such as the number 12 for example. I know there is a religious/spiritual reason for teaching much of the art in sets of 12 but know nothing else of it. Any other history or spiritualism behind the method of teaching would be appreciated. Can anyone share any reference material that discusses this? Thanks, Lou --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 08:57:25 -0800 (PST) From: Felipe Jocano Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Filipino History To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Lou; Much of what you are asking about can be considered part of the oral traditions within the Filipino martial arts. Hence, there aren't that many books that directly touch upon the spiritual tradition within the various FMAs as compared to what you'll find written about the Japanese and Chinese martial arts, and more recently, the Indonesian martial arts. A book that gives an overview of the spiritual traditions found in various martial arts around the world is Maliszewski's Spiritual Traditions of the Martial Arts, published by Tuttle. For what it's worth, the Filipino martial arts get one chapter there - but remember, this book is more like an overview of the entire field so the treatment of the material is necessarily not very deep. Also, the focus of the FMA chapter is on arnis/kali/eskrima, which is but one branch, but a very well-known one, of the Filipino martial arts. Much of what I have seen written in English comes from interviews with various teachers now living in the West (i.e., US & Europe) but these are scattered across various popular martial arts magazines. To focus on your question: one reason for teaching the art in sets of twelve is that the number twelve stands for the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. This is derived from Catholic Christianity - the Philippines is primarily a Catholic country, although the number of non-Catholics (Protestants, Muslims, etc) is growing. This is a reflection of the depth of the influence Catholicism has had on our history and, in many areas, the local cultures. The use of the number twelve in mysticism is an example of the syncretism of Catholicism with local spiritual and religious traditions. I might also add that Philippine silat also uses the number twelve in its teaching methods. It is also a reflection of Islamic spirituality - there are also twelve apostles of Islam. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Betty, I'm sorry you feel that you are being unduly targetted due to your post. I'm sure your son will do his time and get out. I see your concerns as one of a mother wanting to do all she can to protect her son. As would other mothers. The reality is, your son is incarcerated. I hope he gets his act together and overcomes his drug problems. I know a person who was incarcerated. Not really a bad person, but one who got caught up with a bad crowd. Prison certainly put everything into perspective. It was difficult watching the mother-son relationship strained that way. But it happens, a lot. Now then I have family and friends in law enforcement (LAPD, LACSD) and I know a correctional officer working in Folsom State Penitentiary. Use of force is such a hazzard in today's society that it is difficult for LEO to do anything beyond their training and training costs money. Anything beyond the standard set opens that person and the department up for law suits. Unfortunately, the bad guys (and I'm not calling your son one) have more rights than honest, tax paying citizens, more importantly, criminals have more rights than victims. FMA's nature is very effective and fast. It is dangerous in the "wrong hands." Unfortunately, due to his incarceration, your son is now in the same classification for the time being. I know you don't want your son to get hurt or targeted. But I also so know that our LEO and CO want to go home every night, too. Just take it one day at a time. I suggest you contact the Department of Corrections in your state and see if there is a support group that you can attend to help work out some of your feelings.
