Everyone on this list is invited no matter what art you study (or are thinking about studying). Actually, I am looking forward to meeting practitioners of other styles (Kali, Arnis, Silat, etc...). Beginners and advanced practitioners, or those just curious are all welcome. Garry __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I am not that great in "text mode" and am only giving my own opinion so bear with me. Of course I didn't have to give an opinion, or "stick my foot in it" at this time but I want to communicate with all of you given my interest in FMA. I am a new member of the FMA community and have been fortunate to have met some really great Fillipino people and FMA over the last few years. I have the collected signatures, and nuckles with calcium deposits to prove it too. ;-) In this individuals circumstance given the multitude of Internet documentation, videos and texts available for free or purchase that are available this question need not be answered directly by us or even cause any kind of alarm. In my opinion it is too easy to state the wrong thing(thank God for bad "subject lines" and bounced e-mail)...given the use of text vs. the ability to correct and rebut our own and others statements immediately in a manner that this topic might warrant. There is a moral issue here and it is black and white. No FMA should be transferred to an indiviual in Jail from this or any group. I would think that no indiviual with these explicit interests would state their interests so bluntly or make an attempt to contact FMA here publicly or at the dojo. Even their surrepticious contact of anyone would be stretching it but I guess it could happen. It is sad or perhaps better stated not so funny that this particular topic as stated has been perpetuated on one of the largest moderated mail list regarding FMA. Reason would indicate that the inquiry is a troll. If it is not a troll perhaps the inquirer did not know what the Fillipino culture or FMA community is all about. FMA who have techniques to teach are a very tight bunch. Believe me. This has been a difficult thing for me to come to accept and FMA is not your fathers MA! In fact you might need a Fillipino father who knows it in order to learn it. It has at times been frustrating to understand what it is that makes it so and you would have to live it in order to understand. The main point for the lack of desire to transfer knowledge regarding FMA would be that of a historical note imvolving racism. Fillipino people were developing the FMA arts for hundreds of years, at a time when under attack from Europeans at a time when they were being "colonized" by Spain and others. The arrival of Fillipino people to other countries such as the USA did not remove or lessen the burden placed upon them. Stockton, California a very Fillipino community and where many of the more progressive FMA lived such as Cabales, Giron, and others was very divided town at one time. Men and women from different cultures could not live with, intermarry or communicate openly in the manner that they do today given racism. As a method of securing the safety and security of their families, FMA were held tightly. Knowledge regarding FMA was not even necessarily passed on to children for fear that it would bring shame on the community if it were misused. Certainly it was not taught widely to Europeans or lesser known indiviuals until after the late 1950's or early 1960's. That was when the first open schools emerged. There are of course historians that could add much more to what I have said and they would be better able to speak with regard to this. As I have listened to friends and acquaintences speak with regard to this issue I was brought to tears. The Fillipino people had to petition the US Government in order to participate in the Fillipino war against an invasion from Japaneese military having trained Samurai. Bravely at least 12,000 people enlisted, at least 1,000 of which were qualified escrimadors. These indiviuals were forced to petitiion the US Goverment to participate in the effort of pushing back the Japaneese military given that Fillipino's were not considered full US citizens despite the fact that the first Fillipinos had arrived more than 100 years earlier. Leo Giron the Grandmaster of Bahala Na, Stockton, California was one of the individuals who enlisted and held rank as a commando in this effort. The MA taught in other communities, non-FMA had other mechanisms for the transfer of their MA. The arts were brought out of Asia, the Koren, Japaneese and Chinese styles were learned and passed on through agencies which had penetrated the cultures from the outside in a different manner along time ago. Not so with FMA. Other Asain stylists were directly hired, not to fight side-by-side because they too suffered racism but to develop systems to be passed on to American GI's. The Fillipino culture was not approached in this manner a manner that was conducive for the art to be transferred as quickly and as early a date. With regards to the question as to where or how to train this individual in prison. It is foolish to respond to this inquiry and you nor I are not here to respond to anyone as to how to train in any way who may eventually do something illegal. We cannot tell what anyone, any individual will do given the multitude of persons encountered. That is one reason why we study FMA other than the cultural and artistic qualities FMA knowledge brings. I would say that the best indicator of who to teach is what they do, what they endure to train and where their heart is and some of these attributes are absent from the question being asked. Can anyone tell with regard to anyone how they will use any knowledge? I would say that it is likely that we are unable to accurately judge others motives except wehen clear as in this case, and however in other cases it may be us who lacks the heart to know, have become hardened so much so that when we meet someone who would go to the end of the Earth for us...we would not see it for what it is and possibly abuse them. Maybe we need the conviction or renewal with regard to what it is we began seeing in the first place in order to get to know others first hand and not accept what others say regarding them but taking the time to see what decisions need to be made with regard to this issue in order to make the correct decision. We need to have the ability to be honest with ourselves too however. What did we see? At times maybe we see something in others that we think exists in them and it does not exist at all. >>>> BLING BLING!!! Getting back to the subject matter of escrima and learning it, can anyone tell me where to train in the Chicagoland area? I am currently an Affiliate of Mata Sa Bagyo and Bahala Na. I do not think that that the affiliations that I have preclude me from practicing with anyone. In fact I hope not because I would have a hard time working out otherwise and it sure beats swinging sticks at a bag alone. Anyone have connections to FMA in the Chicagoland area? HELP! Just e-mail me. I have fortunately been a student of Jason and Jenna Inay, John Peterson and David Ruiz of Inayan, GM Somera and M Labanog of Bahala Na as well as Carlito Bonjoc, Jr. of Cabales Serrada and Mata Sa Bagayo. I have been involved with martial arts since the age of nine when I began the study of Judo which was the first of less than ten styles or systems that I have studied and...unfortunately none of which I have mastered! But it has been fun and I would like to continue. Talk to you! Tommy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo!
