I started it when I was doing my body building stuff and still do it sometimes. Here's the method (takes legs as an example) Pick the most difficult exercise (read the one you can life the most with) - Squats Do 10 sets. On the negative take 8s to go down and 2 s to go up. Rest 1 minute between sets. Stretch if you feel the need, you will build up some lactic acid with this method so stretching is a good way to help flush it out. As you are working on volume, there's no way you can go heavy...when I do it on a leg press machine I use maybe 135 lbs (I weigh 165). By contrast when I do regular training I am doing 550 lbs. Use a spotter if necessary to make sure you do not speed up. 10s is a long time! Then pick one other complimentary exercise. In my case I do leg extensions 3 sets of 8 at your normal pace (2-3 s extend, 1-2 s back) That's got your quads and everything fired up. You might want to finish with 3 sets of straight leg dead lifts, or hamstring curls but that all depends if you can still walk properly :) For chest you'd do 10 of flat bench, 3 of incline For back 10 of bar bells rows (or pull ups) and 3 of pull ups (or bar bells rows) For shoulders (and I don't recommend it so much for shoulders, they are a very delicate joint after all). 10 sets of press and 3 sets of lateral raises. Some points to note. Some people think volume training means fast sets...not with German Volume training it doesn't. Don't be fooled when you feel stronger in the 5-7 sets...it'll pass. By the time you hit set 10 you'll be in pain. The most difficult thing is to pick a weight you can stick with, you have to get the reps in and if you managed the first 5 sets with a certain weight you should have no real problem getting the next 5. If however the first 5 were very easy, you need to increase it a bit. The gains are in size and in overall strength. It is also a very "destructive" method of training, you will need your rest days and you should not do this exclusively. Annecdotal evidence (from the gym) suggests that 10 weeks is the maximum. Happy training! Steve Disclaimer: The contents of this email are for informational purposes only. This information does not imply any trainer/client relationship. Visit www.dragondoor.com and go to the forums. Look for posts with a RKC next to the name. They are Registered Kettlebell Coaches. Several of them have web pages of their own, with a wealth of information on Kettlebell training. Several of them are martial artists also. Especially look at Mike Mahlers posts and web page www.mikemahler.com I hope this helps. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2004 10:58:02 -0500 (EST) From: gordon walker To: Eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] mobility Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net HI, I am humbled today by the fact that I got the snot beat out of me yesterday yet again. My problem is my lack of mobility. I am having a hard time using the angling strategy in sparring. I dont have the proper distancing in using it, also my timing is zero. The other thing is lack of committment in sparring. I drop my jab after I put it out there and I dont follow up with anything other than a two count combo. jab cross. cross hook. jab jab. then out again. I have read a few things on the arts and find that only real life sparring is where its at in terms of making things that you learn in class more realistic/practical/yours. By yours, I mean a true understanding. I only have a brief glimpse of certain things when im in there now. The good news is I can see that I need to mix it up more, intead of staying outside. Any thoughts on increasing mobility would be much appreciated. Gord --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! The real danger in this type of training is that it leads to the illusion of competence." - Richard Loewenhagen, in Mastering Kung Fu Thought the list might enjoy this quote, which I included in some recent writing. Specifically, the January issue of MartialTalk.com Magazine contains a lengthy editorial from me on the topic of gun control and martial artists -- the thesis of which is that "martial" artists who support gun control fail to grasp the concept of self-defense (in denying themselves or others access to the most effective tools for self-defense). - Phil Elmore http://www.themartialist.com -------------- - Phil Elmore --__--__-- Message: 5 From: POWERFACTOR71839@aol.com Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2004 17:35:20 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] George Storm Kettlebell Question Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Tom, is there actual information on kettle bell training at > physicalstrategies.com or just an ad for where to buy info?  I failed to see > > any real detailed info or howto articles. > > <><><><> > George S. > George, That is an intro piece.
