I didn't believe it at first but it works their website is www.precisiontraining.com Pete Sampogna --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "David Eke" To: Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 16:35:07 +1000 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Dekiti vs Pekiti Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >The way this was explained to me is that each of the 2 masters (Tortal & Gaje) heads up >their own system, which are very different, apart from the names. Actually both systems come from the same family line. GM Gaje was originally taught by his Grandfather Conrado Tortal, who in turn was taught by GM Binas. There might be significant differences now in curriculum but they share history and lineage. >Each claims that the other is seriously inferior as a fighting art, compared to their own. Considering the shared history and lineage I'm sure people can see the above comment for what it is. Over the past twenty or so years the Pekiti Tirsia System of Arnis has undergone a number of name changes. Arnis (for Kali) was dropped from the name when GM Gaje moved to America. Dekiti was used by GM "Nene" Tortal to differentiate him from GM Gaje's Pekiti. For the most part the name changes can be attributed to marketing. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Scott Kinney" To: Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 11:55:12 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Mobility Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just a couple of thoughts: 1. Benny Urquidez used to (still?) shows a drill where you 'dance' with a heavy bag for a couple of minutes. Just swing it, spin it. Then keeping a light touch, just move around with the bag. You're not pushing it or being pushed, you're just following it around. 2. Lay a bunch of cones/paint cans/rocks around you in a circle, star or whatever. Take a fighting stance in the center, and pick, say, a jab. Step and jab to each marker in turn. Go clockwise, go counter clockwise, go to opposite markers, go random if you can. 3. Lay out some triangles (like a jagged row of teeth) and work your way down them, advancing and retreating. Work an attack and a cover as you do this. Hope this helps, Scott Kinney Amateur Barbarian > > HI, > I am humbled today by the fact that I got the snot beat out of me yesterday yet again. My problem is my lack of mobility. I am having a hard time using the angling strategy in sparring. I dont have the proper distancing in using it, also my timing is zero. The other thing is lack of committment in sparring. I drop my jab after I put it out there and I dont follow up with anything other than a two count combo. jab cross. cross hook. jab jab. then out again. > I have read a few things on the arts and find that only real life sparring is where its at in terms of making things that you learn in class more realistic/practical/yours. I only have a brief glimpse of certain things when im in there now. > The good news is I can see that I need to mix it up more, intead of staying outside. > Any thoughts on increasing mobility would be much appreciated. > Gord --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Steve Carlo" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 12:46:58 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Good Sticks Suppliers Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I'm curious where people get their sticks from? My first instructor gave me a pair of unsanded, rattan sticks with 4 nodes on. They lasted very well. Then I decided to get some new ones as my first ones had takena beating...they arrived sanded down to the point that the nodes were effectively smooth and worst of all lacquered. The multi-node sticks were the same although not as smooth. I got these for a very good price from doce peres in CA and even though I dislike them due to the sanding and lacquering they aren't bad. Anyone have any good sources for decent simple sticks? No sanding, no lacquering and no need for elaborate patterns burned in them - I want working sticks not display pieces!
