Seriously, if you aren't spending focused time on footwork drills and Carenza or shadow boxing, your foot work will develope slower. An easy way to work footwork into you routine on bags and such is to add the stepping drills before and after each combination or flurry. The old stick and move... Also I like to work my footwork patterns and shuffles on the rests between speed bag, heavy bag and double end ball rounds. You keep your heart rate up better and make better use of short time! Ask your training partners and instructors for good drills if you need them, and they can offer good examples that will fit with your curiculum. Let me first start off by wishing everyone the best for the upcoming year. Last year was a bit stressful for me personally but I hope and pray that 2004 will have much better things in store for all of us. As the year begins, I find myself (yet again) going back over my basics, continuing to offer my help to my younger training brothers/ younger students and sparring (with not only other FMA practioners but with other martial arts systems as well). I’m especially digging the sparring these days as its allowing me to combine the numerous stick, blade, empty hand and ground work elements of the Garimot system (which I study under Gat Puno Abon Baet) into my personal development. I’m wondering if anyone on this mailing list has had any firsthand or close knowledge of the Arnold Battle of Columbus Martial Arts World Games IV which will be held in Columbus Ohio March 5-7, 2004. Info on the competition can be found at http://www.wuma.com/aboc.html. I am considering entering the 35 and older competitions outlined under Kali in the Disciplines/Divisions section of the website. I first learned about the competition last year and was intrigued by the fact that it contained FMA components (forms, single stick and double stick competitions, etc.) in addition to the Japanese, Korean and Chinese arts which are much more prevalent in competitions of this magnitude. I was unable to attend or participate due to conflicts with work last year. This year my interest was renewed when I learned that respected FMA practioners such as Dan Inosanto, Chris Sayoc and Cacoy Canete are listed on the website as advisors (I assume with establishing the rules of the competition, maintaining Filipino tradition, etc.). While we as Garimot practioners spar with limited, if any, padding I do understand that this competition will have protective gear and a fairly easy to understand set of rules have been outlined (also available on the site under the Kali area). My questions to anyone familiar with the competition or the event are as follows:  Were the FMA represented with fairness, equal time and respect?  Were FMA present as active judges or were the FMA events judged by members of different disciplines? [Note: No disrespect intended here to other systems. I believe it’s a fair question to see if FMA with in-depth knowledge of our art will be on hand as active participants especially during forms and competition judging.]  Were there many competitors in the 35 and older category?  Why is there no knife sparring competition? General overall comments on the rules and the event would be welcomed while I consider entering. Please be aware that I’ve contacted the organization directly with my questions and I’m awaiting a response. In the meantime I’ve added this to the post for comments. If this is indeed an event that we as FMA exponents should be involved with then I look forward to attending, showing our brotherhood, watching the demonstrations and obtaining some vital and truthful feedback on my sparring abilities at my ripe old age (smile). Looking forward to your comments and perspectives. They used to be based in Blackstock Road in London, but have relocated near Lincoln. The cane in question is really for sale to the rattan furniture making trade and, as such, comes in long lengths and various thickness. Because of this, it is usually better to visit and collect, as you can then select the thickness you require. If you are based in the States, or elsewhere, I am sure that someone somewhere must know of a similar such supplier. At the Cane Store in the UK, the guy uses large, heavy-duty bolt-croppers to cut the cane. This means that the ends all need finishing. With this being the case, I prefer to have them cut one inch longer than I need, so that I can cut the ends nice and square, with a fine-tooth saw (a hacksaw is ok). In order to then round the ends, I hold them over a flame until the end just catches alight. As soon as that happens, I ram the end into a THICK cloth, held in the palm of my other hand, and simply twist the stick from side to side. This rounds the ends nicely, and saves the time and effort of filing or sanding. Shipping, packaging and handling starts at $8 for up to 3 pairs. Add $1 per pair over 3 pairs. The sticks are 1" diameter (may vary slightly) and 32" long. Perfect to cut down to your preferred size. I'll bet that most 'martial artists' concentrate the most on the arts side - that's why Tae Kwon Do is so popular! Personally, I think that there is nothing at all wrong with that. People play chess not because they are likely to lead an army into battle, but because they enjoy it. As for gun control, I'm not against citizens having weapons. I'm English and live in a country with very strict laws on the ownership of firearms, but I feel that in any society where any tom dick or harriet can carry a cassull 454, doesn't that lead to a society of further paranoia and need for gun ownership? Complete bans on firearms don't completely work either. In Britain, the year after the ownership of handguns was banned, crimes involving handguns rose, and continued to rise only until 2003. Go figure. Now I'm going to contradict myself here. I live in what you would call a rough neighbourhood. Not long ago while I was at work my house was broken into and my partner had floor cleaner thrown in her face by a man she'd never seen before. I live behind a pub and a pizza takeaway (no hope for my diet then...) and every Friday and Saturday night there is some kind of altercation there. As a consequence I carry a knife and I've made sure my partner carries a knife and that she can use it effectively. This isn't entirely legal here, but I'm afraid it is necessary, I know for a fact that most of the d-heads around here carry one too. What would happen if they had guns? What would happen if instead of floor cleaner, my partner copped for a .45? Incidentally,I like to balance my training between the martial and the arts. Aside from training in the fma and jkd, I also train in a distilled version of jkd which I believe does actually work. And, I also believe that fma is a good martial art for this era, it is a number of systems which when taught properly balance the martial and the arts. Just a thought.
