I am left handed, and in the early days I was forced to be right handed because none in my classes were able to drill left handed. So? Start training with your boy left handed, he needs the advantage anyway, and if you cant do it, train mismatched. Then you will have to adapt... Jon __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? (I was referred here by Guro Garry Bowldes). I am trying to find practitioners of Hilot (deep tissue massage and bone-setting, among other things) in my area. As a student of Serrada Escrima, I have it in my heart to learn more about this art along with the art of Escrima, which I'm learning from my uncle. I reside in the South Bay Area (Santa Clara) of Northern California. Blessings, ~John --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! For example, a #1 strike delivered by a righty to me is coming it at angle #2, and I treat it as such...I will use a shoulder block or an outside sweep against the number #1, using an inside sweep or cross block to a #2, a punch block to a #3, a pass to a #4, etc. You just have to remember that it is backwards, but also remember that we are taught to think "angles" instead of type of weapon, or which hand, from day one; against a lefty, that is essential to be able to deal with it. Mike Inay once saw me pass my stick to my right hand when I was trying to figure out and translate, from right hand to left hand, a technique he had just shown us. Mike immediately told me to put the stick "back in your left hand, Kim, that's where it belongs." He forced me to rethink my approach, and a light bulb went off in my head. He was telling me exactly what I'm telling you; it's all relative to angles, not "handedness." One thing you'll discover, or your son will discover, is that lefties have an advantage over righties...I'll let you guys find this out on your own, but he'll see it as soon as you start training with flow drills. Hope this helps; if not, E-mail me, and I'll be glad to explain further. Train with your son with your left hand and enjoy the experience, laugh at the mistakes but when you get together with your other training partners notice how you have improved. We do it as mandatory Message: 3 From: "Marc Denny" Big Brother Britain, 2004 Yes its scary (I think so anyway) but there is a flip side. They don't work half the time!! In my city, they put in all the cameras but had no budget to maintain them. Still some of the cameras are very powerful and can zoom in to car tax disks on the windscreen with amazing clarity from a mile away. A few recent muder or serious assaults in the city centre late at night have been soved with the cctv being instrumental in capturing them. I went with a woman who had been attacked in a pub where I was called in to help make secure - she was the manageress - and they showed the tapes of that area. They had picked up the guy leaving the pub and followed him, unaware he had just assaulted her, and watched him go around the city centre streets. The y showed us the tape, she made the id, I got to see the face. Festive season shoplifters were targeted and they claim success but you never really know. I do remember one fight that spilled out onto the street from the club I ran about 7 years ago. Normally wouldn't go on the street but sometimes it happens. Anyway we were worried about the CCTV evidence from the camera trained on us and that we might be treated unfairly as it wouldn't have shown the beginning of the incident. The policeman simply said it didn't work anyway. Another concern is that reliance on cameras simply displaces crime to areas afforded less protection, mainly the poorer areas where business interests are not served. Who's interests do the cameras best serve? There does seem to be more concern over the speed cameras proliferating the UK which seem more concerned in raising revenues than actually dealing with car offence. The cameras replace real traffic cops and so the person with no insurance can feel free to drive around with no care or responsibility while someone who strays over a limit becomes criminalised. It's a mixed up world at times so I feel its best to lead ones life in a way that you feel best and would like to be treated yourself. All have an incredibly good checking (live) hand, and all are very good with a knife in Espada y Daga mode. I guess that once they got over the problem of training with a stick in the wrong hand, they reaped the benefits of easier development of the more complex areas. (they only chose to train this way to fit into classes). I have also trained a couple of guys who wanted to learn left handed,so we adapted the drills to fit a mixed left/right combination. If you do a regular box pattern/sumbrada drill, starting with the downward shot to the head, but block it with a wing block, instead of a roof block, things should move in the right direction. Disarms should work out quite easily in the end. Try to use the "empty hand" disarms, like a snake, with the stick hand, and vice versa. Eventually you will find that most disarms, with minimal adjustment, will work on both sides, against lefties and righties. I was amazed to see such diversity in the responses I received. Since the above named event is early in the year, I was also wondering if anyone could direct me to a webring or link to various other competitions or events happening throughout the year. I'm aware of the Dog Bros gathering and only a few others. I'd like to make it a point to go visit more events and competitons this year and reach out to others in my FMA community. It's even small enough to be hidden in your hand once drawn out. If you're concerned about the stopping power you can use it with a Glaser safety slug. That gives you about 100% transference on target and still won't penetrate walls. If you're at home and really want it as a defensive round you can candycane load with a FMJ and Glaser. But I don't have any experience with this. I just heard from a friend of a friend of a friend... you know.
