Tibetan White Crane uses something called the 'mook yan pai' or 'wood ear plaques' - basically a thick square plank, with a an oblong hole cut from one side as a grip. For training, they just go through their basic punches, which are long range and have a lot of swing to them. Can't remember the name of the ones that look like a Chinese lock. As a result of my left handedness I am much better at checking with my left hand than most students of my skill level. I have also noticed that it is easier for me to transfer my blade to my left hand and use it appropriately then it is for people who are right handed. -- Frank Sayoc Fighting System --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Scott Wiggins" To: Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 17:43:15 -0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Kettlebells Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net If anyone is interested, particularly in the UK, there is a very good magazine article in this months Mens Health magazine, complete with suggested workout. However, Dr. Fackler and Dr. Roberts are SME and I know that Dr. Roberts has been consulted on by Military and law enforcement in this area. Sanow and Marshall have attacked the studies as "Jello shooting," however, they have an agenda of their own. Read the literature, make up your own mind. Message: 9 Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 07:53:36 -0800 (PST) From: Phil Elmore I seem to recall reading that Fackler's and Roberts' test results were the subject of some controversy...? I may be thinking of a different study. _________________________________________________________________ Let the new MSN Premium Internet Software make the most of your high-speed experience. http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=byoa/prem&ST=1 --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Van Harn, Steve" To: "Eskrima Digest (E-mail)" Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2004 12:14:52 -0600 Subject: [Eskrima] Arnis Sikaran - Jornales System forthcoming seminar dates Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just a few quick dates of upcoming seminars that Kataas-taasang Puno Bong Jornales will be holding in 2004: February 7 - Sandusky, MI - Arnis Sikaran Lubid(rope) contact Gary Nepper at 810.672.8910 May 15 - Detroit, MI - Arnis Sikaran Lubid, contact Jaye Spyro at 248.542.5371 K.P Bong will also be at various locations in Demark and Sweden from February 19 to March 1st, teaching various aspects of the Jornales System hosted by American Kenpo System's Ingmar Johansson, ph #46.11.103.610 Anyone who may be interested in more details can contact me directly as well. This is one of the reasons that GM Estalilla's system defines strikes according to direction and type of strike: "horlef gore" (for a horizontal left gore strike), "overright" (for overhand right chop or slash), or "vertical(or radical) right(or left)" for upward (or downward) strikes from the right or left side. Remember, the transition from stick, to blade, to empty hand requires minimal change in body mechanics. This, I think, leads GM theory of paying attention to the angle of the attack. FYI, I understand that Sigung Ed Bansuelo, who is a righty, learned Serrada (Cabales/Anthony Davis) with his left because he was unable to train with his right. Agree: most righties are used to training with other righties that they loose coordination (or a fraction of a second slower responding) when confronted with a lefty. It makes sense to train both ways right and left if for no other reason than ambidexterity and coordination. (Isn't that part of the reason we do Sinawali drills?) BTW, a belated Happy New Year to the Ray Terry and the board! I would love to get over to California, but it would actually be easier for me to fly over to the Philippines since I'm based in Malaysia. Bobbe, thanks for the information. My teacher is from Cacoy's group and I would be interested in trying out both to see their different methods of teaching. However, if I ever do make it over to the PI, I would prefer sticking with Cacoy's group. Would you happen to have an estimate of how much their daily charges are for room and board and training? Thank you. Emil, I'm away from home right now, but drop me a reminder in a couple days and I'll send you Cacoy's contact info in Cebu City. You can contact him directly for the needed info.
