Look how long it took them to build the WWII Memorial!!! Last count I heard was there are approx. 1,000 WWII Veterans dying a day. Sam FILIPINO VETERANS NEW BENEFITS: The Department of Veterans Affairs is offering new VA services for certain World War II Filipino veterans under two bills signed into law by President Bush. VA estimates that as many as 9,000 Filipino veterans living in the United States who are citizens or lawfully admitted for permanent residence may be eligible for some of the expanded benefits. Previously, both Commonwealth Army veterans and New Philippine Scouts were eligible for treatment of service-connected disabilities in VA medical facilities. The Veterans Health Care, Capital Asset, and Business Improvement Act of 2003 removes the requirement that these veterans must qualify for VA service-connected compensation as a condition of health care. In addition to removing the compensation requirement, the law treats both groups equally, expanding eligibility for certain health care benefits to New Philippine Scouts. Under earlier regulations, only Commonwealth Army veterans were eligible for treatment of non-service-connected disabilities in the same manner as U.S. WW II veterans if they receive certain VA compensation and reside legally in the United States. Service-connected Filipino veterans who meet the U.S. citizen/residency requirements are eligible for treatment for any condition at the VA Clinic in the Philippines. The health benefit changes are effective immediately. Affected Filipino veterans not currently using VA health care may apply for enrollment in the VA medical plan immediately by completing Form 10-10EZ online at www.va.gov/1010ez.htm or by requesting a mailed form by calling VA at 1-877-222-8387. Filipino veterans seeking care must include proof of legal residency with their applications when submitted to the VA treating facility of their choice. Acceptable documents are: · A valid U.S. passport · A birth certificate showing he or she was born in the U.S. · A Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the U.S. issues by a U.S. consulate abroad · Verification by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to VA that the Filipino veteran is a naturalized citizen of the U.S. · Verification by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to VA that a veteran is an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S. The Veterans Benefits Act of 2003 will provide some Filipino World War II veterans additional financial benefits that were requested by the administration. It will double the VA disability compensation currently paid to New Philippine Scouts if they live in the United States and are either a citizen or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence. Previously these veterans were paid at half the disability rates normally paid to U.S. veterans. That law will improve benefits for the eligible survivors of both New Philippine Scouts and veterans of the Commonwealth Army or organized guerrilla units if the survivors are currently paid at the half rate and meet the U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent alien criteria. Those changes are effective immediately and no action is required by the affected Filipino veterans or dependents who are currently on the rolls at the lower rates. VA will automatically adjust their payments. New Philippine Scouts who lawfully reside in the United States are now eligible for burial in a national cemetery and are eligible for the monetary and headstone or marker burial benefits available to U.S. veterans if they meet the residency requirements. When charged one frequently needs to circle back, to the left or right. That is more difficult for the attacker to adjust to. First I'd like to point out that I only mentioned a .454 as a poor attempt at ironic comedy. I also stand corrected on the gun crimes in the UK stats, I suspected as much but foolishly went for the wrong stats. I also intended that part of my comment to be against gun control legislation as practiced in this country. As for the criminals with guns argument, I still feel that it is flawed. Yes, criminals may fear being confronted with a firearm wielding citizen, but judging by the criminals I've encountered, that would not necessarily deter them, merely encourage them to wield a firearm themself just in case they met with a firearm wielding citizen. That was basically the crux of my comment as I intended, not as I typed. In my opinion also, I feel that the constabulary in the UK should be uniformly armed, like in almost every other European country. Not merely for the prevention of crime, but primarily for the protection of the police officers. Firearms in the hands of the wrong people are a big, big no no. (talk about stating the obvious!) So I feel tight controls on firearms are necessary. Gun ownership, in my opinion, is a vicious circle. I value everybody's opinion on this, and I know that everybody has their own opinion. I welcome all comments on this and I'd truly like to know everyone's opinion. Thanks, Ste O _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free. In high forward pressure situations (e.g. someone crashing-in, going for the takedown, forgeting about the stick in your hand) circling back and to a side will allow you the distance and angle to beat them repeatedly about the head and shoulders with your favorite baton. FMA especially arnis has different oracions "spells" to make them invincible in combat. In Malaysia alone, Silat is considered to be more than a martial art, it is a way of life, the source of medical advice, etc. It is considered as a form of religion, that you pray to spirits, do chants and the like You can't just study the art alone without embracing its religious beliefs. Except for some forms which has evolved to a science, majority confirms to its spirituality. I believe that is really more a part of the animist history of the Philippines rather than a part of any FMA. i.e. a great many of the old Manongs would have nothing to do with the animist spells or amulets given their own strong Christian beliefs.
