BELIEVE IT OR NOT. My own travels to the Philippines are inadequate to having a basis for an opinion, but I note that in Edgar Sulite's "Masters of Kali, Arnis and Eskrima" that in his interviews of the various masters he frequently asked them their thoughts on anting-anting. Its been a while since I read it, but my memory is that some were believers, some thought it conflicted with Christian belief, and some just didn't buy it. If somebody is learning a martial art, he/she should bear in mind that almost all of them are an important part of ancient cultures and also served practical purposes like war or healing from diseases . So there was a high possibility of getting killed if going into battle but although warfare has changed today involving the use of modern arms from distant places I am convinced that if anyone would be in situations of close combats (I mean those where your life could be taken) or become involved in something anyone would feel his/her life really threatened by something exceeding his/her own skills, our human nature would look for a superior being for help. We are not a machine without any knowing of the value of our own lives, remaining as cold as ice and acting consecuently when our life is in danger. This is the real fiction as we can see in action movies (and I 'm not saying I do not enjoy them). That part of human nature was in my opinion deeply known and experienced by real ancient warriors, therefore their cults became so relevant. Who knows it really helped them to return home safely? The power of the mind is still a mistery to us. It doesn't have to be considered a magic thing. Not to mention the healing power of our minds and emotions. It is not just a good topic to sell books. As for old manongs beliefs and cults, do not forget they frequently got involved in combats where their life was really endangered and this happened not so long ago. Please do not understand this as I am being disrespectful. In my particular case I would probably not do the same when going into an eskrima combat due my life is not endangered anytime and also I belong to a different culture but if I had the possibility of being a witness to some of their cults I would appreciate with an open mind. Showing an intimate aspect of your beliefs is something others may not always understand. Maybe this is why I have been told some masters of the Philippines would prefer not to teach their art to people from different places and cultures. They typically don't believe in them, but they are at least familiar w/it. Re Tatang, I'm familiar with his belief of it as well as his relatives. Then there was Angel Cabales' infamous comment. Something along the lines of "they can have their anting-anting, but they still fall down when I hit them with my stick". Cacoy Canete told me an interesting story once. A fellow believed strongly in his anting-anting. Said it would give him victory over his opponent. Well, he got the cr*p beat out of him (at a fight during a fiesta). Bumps and cuts all over his head. Cacoy laughed about his anting-anting power... Then he said the fighter announced to the crowd that he would show the power of his anting-anting. He pulled something out of his pocket and rubbed it over his face. Cacoy said the bumps and cuts disappeared right before his eyes. He was amazed. Said that it obviously didn't help his eskrima, but it did seemingly do something magical to his wounds...
