His achievement--the first circumnavigation of the globe--was "the terminal event of the European Renaissance," asserts Joyner. Only an uncommonly determined man could have persevered in an extended journey into this unknown." In 1520 less was known about the Pacific Ocean than we know today of interstellar space." When he was slaugh altered by South Sea Islanders, his chronicler lamented, "They killed our mirror, our light, our comfort, and our true guide." This book provides a solid account of the explorer's life and accomplishment. Joyner reminds us how the voyage felt to the men who lived through it; success was dubious and distant, perils and discomforts were felt daily. Exceptionally well written, this is the first biography of the explorer to appear in more than two decades. Recommended for both public and academic libraries. - David Keymer, SUNY Inst. of Technology, Utica Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. >From Kirkus Reviews A straightforward but tepid biography from fisheries biologist Joyner of the great visionary Magellan, whose resolve to reach the Spice Islands by sailing around the lands encountered by Columbus and others prompted the first circumnavigation of the globe. Joyner begins with an overview of the history of seafaring and of Portuguese exploration of sea routes to India. Magellan, member of a rural branch of the Portuguese royal family, emerges from obscurity in the midst of the struggle in the... "Why does this crazy fat old man continue to do this stuff??!!" As I roll over on my sore ribs, propped up on my sore elbow and hobble over to the washroom in the middle of the night to take some aspirin. I know that I need to do it though. A couple of years ago I was back in LA and I stopped in to pay my respects to Danny. I was warmly welcomed by staff and Danny without muss or fuss. On the other hand, I also walked into an Inasanto blend school (in another country that will remain nameless) and the needle on the cult warning guage that I had pegged. Warning Will Robinson! Danger! Danger! With these guys, if it wasn't from Danny, it didn't exist.< Yep, try the UK. One of my American friends couldn't believe the way Guro Inosanto is revered in the UK. People talk about him as if he is the font of all knowledge, who cannot be questioned. And more worryingly, anyone who shows a link to him ("I'm qualified under an instructor who is under an instructor who has trained with DI") tend to suggest they are the biggest fish around! One reviewer of an Edinburgh seminar described how the "congregation" fell silent as Guro I walked into the room!!!!! I am hearing an increasing number of people talk about "being honoured to be given the chance to train with Guro Inosanto". Like, yeeees, you've paid your seminar deposit before the numbers limit is reached, you're on the seminar. Nothing of any great significance that I can seein getting onto the course. But still the cult of Inosanto is being built up in the UK. I've trained on one of the Edinburgh courses, and the number of bodies (usually about 100) means that you may get to take home one or two techniques - in the main you get to boast that you've been in the room with a man who trained with the legendary Bruce Lee - I would estimate that out of the 100 who trained at the same time as I did, about 70-80 were there due to the BL connection.
