I have heard some say, "he has forgotten more martial arts then we will ever know" I think of him as a GOOD borg (star trek analogy)... he assimilates full systems, and teaches the concepts of "absorb what is useful reject what is useless and add what is specifically your own" emphasis on absorb and reject. He trains with the best and continues to be a student in thought word and deed, though he has more instructor titles and black belts (for lack of a better way of describing) then can fit on a page. And he earned every one, and bit of it. He is a black belt under the Machados.. he did that by working for it, not because of who he is... and he was in his 60s doing it. The trouble I find with this is that he can only ever pass on "what he has absorbed". Mr Inasanto can only ever teach "Dan Do". As is the case with us all. We can only pass on that which we actually took in, in the first place. Of the Hundreds (thousands?) of hours training that I have done, I have cultivated but a few techniques that work for me, and thus I have passed on to others. And don't give me that "Syllabus " crap either. I remember my Goju instructor vividly espousing, "now, what I'm going to teach you is absolute garbage, but I want you to memorise it as, one day, your gonna have to teach this!" I think a few are missing the original point. Seek your own truth! Most recently, Marc Scott, Craig Stovall, Kendal Coats, Steve Holley, and Mike Castro all made points that I wish I had made. Trouble is, I'm the kind of person who, having neither the time nor the inclination to 'beat around the bush', I tend not to mince my words too much. This being the case, when I observe something which is clearly 'bollocks' I'm rather inclined to say so. Quite naturally, this approach to life can cause problems, but at least people know where I stand on an issue. Needless to say I have been biting my lip somewhat on this most recent one. I will, however, add my two-pence worth now, and risk the wrath that may indeed follow. Firstly, I would like to say that I have the greatest respect for Guro / Guru / Mr / Dan / Inosanto. I have attended several of his seminars in the U.K., and one in the USA. I wouldn't really say that I have been a regular attendee in recent years, however, as I have been rather put off by the antics and attitudes of 'others' on these seminars - okay, I admit it, I'm mincing my words now aren't I?! Now I don't know who 'makes the rules', regarding how such seminars are meant to be conducted and run, but I notice that, in recent years especially, there seems to have been a blanket ban imposed on a number of issues ranging from: taking pictures to (almost) breathing out loud. Another thing is that if you are not directly under Mr Inosanto (an appointed instructor, apprentice - 'disciple' perhaps! - don't expect to get much of a look in, especially during the seminar. I won't say more, as I have no reason, or wish, to offend anyone. I would like to ask just one question, however. Something which bothered me at the time, and has continued to do so (at odd times) ever since: Why did an Inosanto Academy T-shirt, that I bought on one of his seminars a few years ago, claim that Boxing originated in the USA? In response to Kendal Coats' comments about 'Reject What Is Useless'. Rick Faye, from the Minnesota Kali Group (MKG), says: "Reject the phrase, 'Reject What Is Useless'." Rick is with us again, in Cambridge U.K., on 21st/22nd February, if anyone is interested. A teacher (and use the word in whatever language you want) should know enough to be able to teach almost anyone they meet providing that person wants to learn. That's what makes them a teacher as opposed to an incredibly skilled fighter. I think some of the problems people are having is due to the titles. The FMA appear to be a lot less formal than the Chinese and certainley the Japanese. My instructors are strictly "Wes" and "Curtis" and "Chris." Some people call them Sifu but that is their choice and they are not made to do that. Let's also take a look at some of the common words used and how we misuse them in the west: sifu - teacher at the father level (simu - father level teacher's wife) sigung - teacher at the grand father level I was told by my Wing Chun instructor that in Hong Kong those titles are only used once you have been accepted as a student. Anyone can train with Master X, but only the ones that Master choses are his students. Before then they are often referred to as Sensang (sp?) which means instructor/teacher. Only when you are accepted as part of the familly does it become sifu. Of course in Japan it is different. No familly connotations. Sensei is the instructor, sempai is used to address your seniors (or often two sensei;s will refer to each other as sempai), shihan is the master. Again I base these statements on my own experience and also the fact that I work for a very well known Japanese company and have asked for guidance with my choice of words. So in a nut shell. To refer to a visiting instructor as Guro to my mind is politeness, I do not know the nuances of the Filipine languages to know if this is strictly correct (although a friend at work is full blooded Filipine and he said Guro is "what we call the teacher"). If you don't like guru there is always Sir/Mr/Ms X. I hate using Sir myself and I hate being referred to as Sir, but that's simply because the only person who bestow upon me the honour of being called Sir is the monarch of England. It's a politeness thing. _________________________________________________________________ Learn how to choose, serve, and enjoy wine at Wine @ MSN. http://wine.msn.com/ --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 21:29:00 -0800 (PST) Subject: [Eskrima] Useful military instructions Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In an attempt to get us off the Danny thread a bit...
