Overall, I would rate the set as a good buy. It's difficult to rate instructional videos because the value of the content depends on what one already knows. The first video is a collection of cutting tests, and kind of a Cold Steel ad. I felt like calling up and buying every blade mentioned, so it was quite effective. Since I've never seen another video with such cutting tests, I'll rate it a unique buy. Lynn cuts a hanging roast and other targets using a variety of blades. As for the rest of the set, I'm not convinced that one would spar or even fight that way after hundreds of practice rounds. Lynn presents a lot of information in a clean and rehearsed manner. I've seen a lot of knife videos. If you've had it up to your ears in knife-tapping sensitivity drills, complex take downs on over-cooperative opponents, exotic twirling methods or people jumping around like monkeys showing the deadliest knife techniques known to man the Cold Steel set is a nice break. Any votes for the most entertaining knife video? My vote goes to James Keating's "Mississippi River Boat Gambler Style." Although I admire the man for his persistent research, my brother and I were rolling on the floor during this one. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 10:14:46 +0000 (GMT) From: jonbroster@another.co.uk To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Padded Sticks Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi For anyone who is interested there are directions for making good, durable padded sticks on my website. Interesting... I noticed they have some connections to William Sanders (or at least did a seminar with him). I was wondering...has anyone here ever had any dealings with William Sanders? Anyone care to offer any thoughts, opinions, or stories? Feel free to contact offline. Opinions I've gathered on this gentleman seem to be...mixed. Just looking for the straight dope here...no agenda. Response: Craig, I haven't worked out with William Sanders but I did attend "The Gathering of the Tribes '03". Pendekar Sander's group from Port Huron, MI was there(read the review on Adventures page). The school is run by Guru Basar Muda Jerry Jacobs. I can tell you if they are any representation of Pendekar Sander's skills then he was well represented. These guys were phenomenal. I arrived bright and sunny at 9AM and these guys were already outside full out knife sparring and dripping sweat. Pretty intimidating for an introduction. But that was it. Absolutely no ego whatsoever and they came only to learn from Mushtaq. Guru Jerry and his group have considerable skills but you would never know it to talk with them. Anyone like that has a fair chance in a bladed encounter. These are different than Pak Vic's Soempat sticks and are more of a training aid than all out weapon...but, that doesn't mean they couldn't be used as such. To the people that inquired about them. I will have a batch ready soon and will post them on my website. All the details and pricing will be there too. I'm calling them "Minden" Sticks in honor of Dave Minden, the man who developed them back in the 80's. I'm sure Todd will let me know if that's not ok. ;-) William www.newenglandpekiti-tirsiapitbulls.com _________________________________________________________________ Find great local high-speed Internet access value at the MSN High-Speed Marketplace. http://click.atdmt.com/AVE/go/onm00200360ave/direct/01/ --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Larry St. Clair" To: Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 13:47:13 -0600 Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Soft Sticks Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey All, I'm just playing catch up this week and wanted to throw in my pennies on the soft sticks. So far we have been using some that we ordered back in March of last year. We have used them since then both in regular practice sparring and drilling on average 3 times per week and have hosted a tournament with them as well. All in all they have held up to us hitting each other in different types of helmets and sparring gear. I think it is a good investment so that the students can do some more contact orientated drills. Plus if it is ActionFlex, I believe they offer a replacement stick if it does break which is pretty cool too. Hope everyone is having a great new year, Larry --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Fri, 6 Feb 2004 14:17:31 -0800 From: mark@swervingatom.com To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Cold Steel etc. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Ron et al, Fair enough - you all make good points. I am absolutely guilty of not liking his products without ever having seen them (well, I've seen the 'proof' video). Mea culpa. I suppose that's because there are so many other outstanding products on the market made by people who, I believe, represent our arts in a more positive manner, both in terms of their martial abilities as well as their public persona. Lynn Thompson's knives are fine products at their price point and I am a big fan of the sjamboks he imports. It would be nice if he was content with letting the quality of his products stand on their own without the negative stuff, but that's just my opinion. I've *never* seen or heard of any of Thompson's colleagues in the industry (Spyderco, CRKT, Emerson, etc) projecting themselves quite like he does. Also, calling yourself the 'winner' of an event that by its nature does not have winners or losers, regardless of one's performance, is pretty weak in my book. Honestly, it would take a hell of a video for me to get past that. Regarding Coke vs. Pepsi, anyone who knows me knows my biggest vice is my addiction to Diet Coke - but I didn't make that choice because of the actions of the management or shareholders of Pepsi, and I especially didn't do it because Coke bags on Pepsi. I know I'm not the only one that views Cold Steel's products in a somewhat negative light due to the public personality of Mr. Thompson. I may be denying myself the martial arts video experience of a lifetime but I think I can live with that. I also don't have the discretionary income to pick up every martial arts video set that looks interesting, so I have to make some choices without being fully informed. Until Blockbuster rents martial arts tapes, I think most all of us are in that boat. It's great that we live in a time where we have so many wonderful educational opportunities to choose from. I encourage everyone to check out as many as your time and money allows. Ron, I wish you and Lynn nothing but the best. I shouldn't have called Lynn Thompson a nincompoop, I was out of line. Now, when much of what I've seen and read from him looks like a duck, quacks like a duck... I call them as I see them, but I should have done so in a more charitable and diplomatic manner. My apologies. I look forward to the opportunity to break bread and/or train with both of you and realize the error of my ways. mfw Mark F. Sadly, my first and only impression of Lynn was not a good one. A mutual friend said he would introduce me to Lynn and I was very much looking forward to it. We ended up being introduced at a Dog Brothers gathering and he shook my hand with a rudely dismissive "no-look handshake". He wasn't even cool enough to look me in the eye. I took this as an indication that he had no use for me and I now have no use for him. I understand that he uses controversy as a marketing tool and is wildly successful, but a liittle courtesy never hurts. Whatever the case, this post will ultimately just be a little more free press for him.
