I go under the knife this friday ( yes - the 13th - what was I thinking?) for a hernia repair. I've seen the cold steel tapes and they deal mostly with large knife tactics. Some of the cutting demonstrations changed my ideas on training, too. Steve --__--__-- Message: 3 From: To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: big knife training? There was once an Internet Forum on which someone who claimed to be an expert on historical bowie techniques posted and moderated, and he became evasive and then upset when asked to discuss his sources. His "moderating" duties seemed to invove insulting and then throwing out people who aske him where he learned the things he knew. As a student of Guro Inosanto, I'm actually used to teachers who enjoy giving credit where it is due, and are happy to tell where they learned what they know. I had four hernia surgeries back to back a few years ago, and brother, that was pain. Nothing like having my groin split open to teach a lesson in humility. I have a Rambo III bowie, and I love it. I use it as the large blade when practicing Espada Y Daga; it has the heft and balance to really be formidable. You said it feels like a small sword...use it that way, as the primary weapon. A large bowie as the advantage to being able to work inside and tight, but still pack a wallop at that range. Not from Jim Bowie himself, perhaps others that came after him. I -believe- the only actual account we have of Jim Bowie's fighting techniques come from the short and sweet Sand Bar Incident. Others? To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The only sources not directly quoted by Bagwell involved some schools that sprung up in New Orleans during the time to teach the mechanical of the various methods of dueling to gentlemen. Direct sources I have never verified...although I usually do. In this case, I have not because my personal support for the Bowie is based on my own evaluation of the few techniques shown by Bagwell and the advantage of a large fast blade at close quarters in my FMA training. I've been using a large wooden training knive that roughly approximates the Bowie's length. When working against knifes of anywhere from 2 1/2 to 8 inch blades, the advantages of the fighting Bowie's sharpened clip point, additional length, speed, and cutting ability really become obvious. I would respectfully suggest anyone curious about the fighting Bowie order an aluminum training knife from www.trainingblades.com and substitute if for your shorter blade in your next FMA blade training class. The Bagwell book is a good starting place as it gives an experienced bladesmith's opinion on the strengths of the design and what characteristics are best for fighting. It will help you "see" what he is talking about when you try it yourself in the dojo. Check the references as well, but most importantly try them for yourself and see if they work for you. - Anthony __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
