Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "1)I have a question about the name posted below: what do you mean by sabungin? Sabung (or sabong) is the Tagalog word for cockfight, that is correct; sabungan is a cockfight match and also means the place where the cockfights are held. You should understand that in Tagalog, the suffix -in is not a common usage. Tagalog uses infixes and prefixes more than suffixes. Therefore, if the producer of the dvd wants to introduce the knife-fighting style based on cockfighting, the proper name should be silat sabung. 2)I am curious though, at the combination of the names silat and sabung. Is this from the southern Philippines? If so, which part? Which ethnolinguistic group practices it? " Sabong/Sabung is a word used in the Central Visayas for cockfighting or the arena, however, silat is not a commonly used word there. If the word combination is used anywhere it's probably down south in Mindanao. For all practical purposes I don't know how a style could be based around the physical dynamics of cockfighting, I'd be interested if someone could post the rationale or philosophy behind the naming. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com.
