Everybody wins: respect and > friendship based on experience. > Let me be candid: The ritual your friend participated in was utterly stupid. He was a blockhead to have taken part. If the "tribe" communities needs such rituals to maintain their peace, they are severly flawed socially. They better get their act together quickly, because the outside world is not going to ignore something that disfunctional forever. Let's be clear that "traditional" is not a synonym for "good". It just means stuff that has been around for a long time: good, bad and in this case ugly. Neither are "tribes" the remnants of a golden age. More often than not, "tribes" meant that you couldn't walk more than a couple of kilometers from your home before getting slaughtered. Apparently the "tribes" in this case are barely past that stage. I find it hard to think of a better definition of progress than "not having to whack each other with nail-studded sticks to make friends". Let's not forget that we are freaking *civilized* in our quest for ever greater MA attainment, shall we? It is all very well to build your friendships around an imagined "caveman" lifestyle. In particular, of course, as long as that's just a hobby. And there's a cosy civilization out there to fall back on, which was build on the blood and crushed bones of *your* ancestors! At least our most popular "cavemen" seem to realize that there is a fine line beyond which harder contact does not mean higher consciousness (or friendship, trust, yaddayadda), but simply brutality and violence. Or at least they know better than to make it public when they cross that line. Stuff that clearly crosses the line will horrify the public and will result in the line being pushed back. And that is a *good* reaction of our civilization, which truly can say "been there, done that, never again". So, I urge all "cavemen" out there to consciously restrict their quest for ever more pain and thrill. Otherwise they, and the MA community as a whole, will experience the civilized pain dished out by lawmakers, lawyers and police. DANGER! ADVERTISEMENT ALERT! Having cleverly neglected to mention seminars in the last couple of weeks in Toronto and Mexico City, I now get around to mentioning the ones in the next few months: March 6-7: Guro Benjamin "Lonely Dog" Rittiner will be assisting me at Alfred Plath's extravaganza in Dortmund, Germany Website: http://www.fma-festival.de/ March 20 Madrid, Spain March 21 Barcelona, Spain I think this may be my sixth year in Spain-- always a good time. I'm sure they would welcome additional players. Conducted in Spanish. May 8-9 Northern Italy (west of Milan) details to be provided soon. May 15-16 Berne, Switzerland My good friend (and head of the DBMA organization in Europe) Lonely Dog hosts Contact: Benjamin Rittiner Phone: 41-31-922-38-93 Email: lonelydog@bluewin.ch Website: www.dogbrothers.ch June 27 DOG BROTHERS GATHERING OF THE PACK For additional info, check our website at http://www.dogbrothers.com/cgi-bin/seminars/seminars.cgi A word about the "Dog Brothers Martial Arts Training Camp": This year it will not be held. As much fun and well-received the first two were, the formula of advertising in the major magazines for several months, flying in such a number of top instructors and providing lodgings, etc was not working-- even with some very friendly fees by some of the instructors-- was not working. Perhaps we needed to set the fee too high, perhaps the forumla of three days before the Gathering necessitated people missing two days of work, perhaps with the inaugeration of the DBMA PIC (Practitioner-Instructor Candidate) mini-camps had me competing with myself (there's 3-4 of them a year and many of those attending would otherwise attend the Summer Training Camp) , who knows? At any rate to invest all that money and time (including a HUGE effort by our VP in Charge of Reality Cindy-- a.k.a. my wife)and to still lose money is frustrating. I really really loved the idea of having the variety and level of teachers that we did, and will look to revisit it in the future, but this year it is not happening.
