Mr. Eke writes: "My own personal view is anyone who can't spell even simple Filipino words hasn't spent too much time either in or studying the Art within the Philippines." This is an ad hominem argument. Mr. Eke is making a claim against this man's skill by indirectly attacking his intellect and education. Poorly done, IMHO. If I were to use this same logic in my own assessment of Mr. Eke's statements, I could discount his comments completely based on nothing more than his improper use of sentence syntax... but I would prefer to raise the bar on this discussion rather than lower it as he has done with this base comment. In truth, anyone who has been around the FMA for a considerable period of time (or who has studied any Asian martial art in depth for that matter) should know that there are at any given time myriad variations on the spelling of foreign terms in our language, even between the written works of the so-called experts in the respective arts those terms are used in. As an example, consider the simple fact that we now refer to the arts of the Philippine archipelago as the "FMA" to avoid confusion over the usage of "arnis/kali/escrima/eskrima". As a twenty-year veteran of the arts and someone who has personally trained with Mr. Loong, I have no reservations with informing the readers of this list that his skills are beyond reproach. If you have any doubt as to the validity of his skills, Mr. Eke, I would suggest that you take the time to attend one of his seminars instead of lobbing potshots at someone you have never met from behind the absolute and guaranteed safety of your keyboard and monitor. For those of you on this list who are more level-headed and reserved in making public assessments of the skills and background of other martial artists, I commend you for showing composure and not just blindly joining in the fray as Mr. Eke seems to have done. This is someone's public reputation we are dealing with here, and none of us should take it lightly when a person on this list makes unfounded comments about another martial artist in such a reckless manner. First, you are incorrect in stating that Blaise mis-spelled Filipino. The mis-spelling was not a post sent by Blaise Loong but rather by Tyrkon. Look it up yourself to verify. If I get any spelling incorrect from here on, please excuse me and don't blame Blaise. To answer your question, Blaise trained with a number of instructors in the Phillipines. One was Hurtado Arpa who was a Chavacano on Mindinao. Next was Ferdinand Dela Cruz of the Asamal tribe. He also trained with Din who was a Tausug. This is all explained in his Silat Subungin DVD's Volumes 1-3. As you have seen from a recent post - a number of the DVD's have been sent to Ray Terry for his critique and review. His lineage is also explained in the Filipino Martial Arts Magazine article posted on the "Warcraft" page of my website www.CelticSword.com. There is also a new article coming out soon on Blaise in the Filipino Martial Arts magazine to further clarify who his teachers were/are. For the most part all you need to do is to go to Blaise's website at www.blayshalla.com or mine at www.celticsword.com to answer many of your questions. There is different information posted at each site, so you will need to review both. If you have any other specific questions to verify Blaise's lineage in the Phillipines or elsewhere - direct them to me and I will be glad to post the same. Seriously though, if all you guy's posting are under the impression that Blaise was under attack I think the whole situation was seriously misrepresented to you. The whole thing has been beaten to death already. Plain and simply you guy's missed the fight. Go back and read the archives to see what the concerns were. Personally I stand by every word I wrote, every question I asked. Some guy's jump on the digest, do some introductory stuff and then don't expect to reviewed or scrutinised? Grow up! You are preaching to the converted on this list, the inspection is sure to be more detailed. To push a point further, you are not just dealing with martial artists here. This is a subsection of people who: a. Make the effort to learn something time consuming and usually make a some sort of sacrifice to do so .Ie. Martial arts b. have taken the time to research what they do on the web. In truth a fairly web savvy group resides at the core of this digest. If you claim to be teaching a 2000 year old art, you can be sure people are going to be asking how did you learn that. < Capuan Boxing or a form of Kali no one has ever heard of.> More specifically, if you are part of a group and you are being represented in a questionable or dubious manner, one of three things must happen. 1. the governing body adresses the representers and asks them to rep in a more appropriate manner. 2.you ask for clarification from the head or the teacher and then make decision 3. 3. you ask yourself, based on the knowledge you have received from the governing body or teacher, if the rep is indicative of the group and if so do you still wish to participate. All of this started when I commented about the website, the rest of it just evolved from there. Personally I don't care where Blaise learned or who from. I am not super impressed by what all is going on here. Based on what has been said and done so far, I am not interested in purchasing any products. Such is the power of branding, imaging and product integrity. It really is worth spending a couple of bucks on a basic marketing book so as not to make really simple mistakes that can cost you market share. Which is in truth how all this started. For what it's worth, I am impressed that through all this, the only action Blaise has taken is to pop some videos onto Ray an ask him to review them.
