In regards of the Estocada or estokada in Filipino Martial Arts. This is a system of Defensive Eskrima used by the Matador or Bullfighter. Estocada is Spanish term means thrust wound or stab wound. Some Eskrimador used the words as Estoca means being defensively ready (fighting stances) and " Parada" means the end of the attack or killing attack. So put them together the "Estoca" + "da" from the word "parada" it's become the Filipino "Estocada or Estokada". The philosophical theory of this art is based on non-agressive fighting system. In the Garimot System the Estokada is fencing techniques by the matador used a tin sword called "sstoque" to kill the Bull in the Bullfighting Arena or Rojedas delos Matadores. The Filipino Eskrimador adapted the term as the Filipino Fencing Arts "Estokada". The reason why I ask the question of estacada being related to Filipino Martial Arts, "estaca" is Spanish term for "stick or club" and yes estacada is picket fence or stockage. But I think your instructor is not the only one using this art. Now I know that is not The Filipino Estokada. I just to give you my thought, goodluck and enjoy your arts. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net This might be an extremely basic question (often the best kind), but here it goes. "Do arts like BJJ utilize weapons in their grappling?" I am primarily referring to small shivs, nerve sticks, etc... I highly respect these arts but due to a busy schedule of my own I just haven't seemed to have been able to find the time to do some research on this. Thus, I pose this question to the readers here as there seems to be such a wealth of knowledge amongst us all. Any help in this regard, especially links to sites, docs, etc..., would be greatly appreciated. - Tyrkon - --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 18:52:19 GMT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Grappling with an edge! From: abreton@juno.com Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net There was a conversation on this list a while ago on that subject. Look for "knife" and "grappling" in the archives. Marc Denny responded to a similar query. I believe he said that when he tried grappling with a knife with one of the Machado brothers (I think it was), he at first got the upperhand, but once Jean-Jacques realized what was happening, he pretty effectively smothered the weapon. If that's not correct, maybe Marc can jump in. Omar Hakim gave us a demo once of just stabbing the S**T out of someone who was in your guard or who had you in the mount. Really scary stuff. One of the important tactics for the knife guy (assuming only one of two people has a knife) is switching hands. A guy can control one arm, but both is hard. I tend to think of the stuff that might conceiveably work here as silat-type ground locks. However, the ones I'm thinking of are directly from throws, and not position-to-submission BJJ stuff. If both people have a knife, then it's the "put your head between your legs" tactic. I'd be interested in other people's answers to that question. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Bobster" To: Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2004 15:19:39 -0800 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Listen without prejudice... Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "We are not this, we are not that" "This guy is full of it, ten years with Inosanto doesn't prove a thing" "Somebody in Cebu will know what I'm talking about, what do you know about Visayan??!" This place is turning into a gee-golly mad house. In an art & society as chaotic & eclectic as Kali/Eskrima/Arnis, and Pentjak/Pencak/Penca Silat, NOT TO MENTION the conglomerate stew of cultures these arts originated from, we're squabbling over a few measly pronunciations? Over whether somebody is badass or not? Quick show of hands, how many of you truly care where quality training comes from, as long as it is indeed QUALITY? Can you recognize the truth in any form it presents itself to you? Alot of people knock Remy Presas, but his people can flow. Alot of people knock Inosanto, but his people can flow. Alot of people knock Cacoy or Dionisio canete, but they're people can flow. Second, this art is known for adaptability in combat. The flow is the flow. I would not give a rat's hairy a$$ if it was called "Beans" (or "Frijoles", whatever you prefer!) If the art preaches malleability & flexibility, couldn't we exercise a bit of that when we discuss terms? Or labels, for that matter? I know Americans who have never been to the Philippines believe with all their heart that they know what the art is called. I know Filipinos who have never left their village, or had an education beyond second grade say they hold the true knowledge, because they are native & it's part of their culture. I have seen Malaysians who have given impressive arguments as to the true origin of the word "Kali". They all have a point, no matter the flaws in logic or approach. To disregard them with an sweep of my hand & say "I already know important things!" is arrogance of the highest order. This is reminiscent of the James Keating slamfest a year ago, another good teacher with quality knowledge & products. It's easy to sit on the other side of the fence & make faces at people. In this age of the internet & mass-produced videos, knowledge is more readily available than ever before. Who here had these opportunities in the 1980's? 1970's? The Filipino & Indonesian arts are more alive & widely practiced than ever, and with exposure to new terms of the art, different points of view & unique approaches to training, we should be open and receptive to the sharing of knowledge, not berate and degrade it. None of us knows everything. I usually end my diatribes with an apology of some sort, but I truly hope this wakes us up. There is strength in unity, no matter how diverse we are. As the directions state, just ftp to ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima or use the search engine off martialartsresource.com. You will not see a 404.
