It makes great marketing copy for the people teaching workshops. But is it the reality? I have some suspicions, but I don't know. And neither do the people whose rice bowl depends on convincing people that only paying for their training will prevent combative vapor lock :-)" Define decent training. My experience (limited!) is that the mindset preceding an MA fight is nothing like the mindset when things are going pear-shaped for real. There is expectation of real harm. There are no rules. There is the possibility of weapons and multiple attackers. And there is the ever-present consideration of aftermath. One of the most stressful aspects of a real-life encounter is the decision whether to throw first or not. One knows that if one lets the other guy initiate, the outcome is going to be less likely favourable than if one goes first. There are, however, legal and otherwise implications of doing that. I guess it must be the same for police officers who have to make a shoot-no shoot decision in a split second. On the rare occasions when I was involved, once the s..t started flying it was almost a blessed relief... On the subject of teaching self-defense, it makes sense that virgins should not teach sex (to use the apt comparison by Animal), but how much of a slut should one be before one is qualified to teach? Even in professions such as medicine there are wide discrepancies as to who should teach - from the "see one, do one, teach one" approach to formalized numbers of procedures one has to carry out under supervision before one is allowed to do them autonomously, let alone teach them. So how many times need i be attacked by a knife before I am a qualified teacher? Does the defense have to be always succesful? I am sure that i cannot teach posthumously, but do 10 sojourns on the ICU qualify me? BTW I vote for Animal's approach of wide-based research and field testing. It seems a truly professional approach to the problem. Finally, has anyone seen the videos by Jim Grover (aka Kelly McCann)? He does not use the word self defense, he calls his stuff "combatives" with the definition that "martial arts you do with somebody, combatives you do to somebody or on somebody". They are now the Book Two of my MA Video Bible. I like his simple approach, but then I have a simple mind.
