Being a student in the Machado style, and not Gracie specifically, I cannot comment further than this as to these subtleties. Interestingly, in as short as 10 years of me watching grappling explode in So Cal from being 95% punching kicking everything in grappling is getting mixed up Just like puncking kicking. If there ever was pure BJJ Gracie or cousin Machado as a pure art it does not exist anymore on the street. There is at least judo, katch, greco roman, and free style wrestling in there and whatever dumog , indonesian silat variants and sambo. 2)From: GatPuno@aol.com Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 07:05:50 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] So far I wasn't beaten. 3)However I also think this arose from Al Sardinas claim that this art is complete. Just when you think you have a complete art you see something new. If you don't see anything new you need new training partners and or a visit to So Cal. . Everything seeems to be here in multiple ways. If you really think you are complete and have stopped learning and modifying your personal system IMHO you are setting yourself set up to be beaten. Training is like a job. It never ends and someone is always asking for something else. Michael Shumacher may be as complete a driver as there is right now. But you can bet if he rests on his laurals the guys behind him will leave skidmarks on his backside. Regards, Carlton H. Fung, D.D.S. There are many coaches > (pick any sport) who sucked at the sport, but became awesome coaches. >Your skill as an instructor is not necessarily determined by your physical >ability. You are taking about American Football, right? Interestingly, in Rugby League and Union the best coaches are also ex-players, there are exceptions but generally this is true. Most of these guys were also good enough to have played rep football. You can't simulate real combat, you can make it realistic but unless someone at the other end with a knife, bare handed..whatever has the INTENT to kill you it is just a simulation. No-matter how realistic, in the back of your brain you know it's not for real. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Stef Morley" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Self defense & the art of bouncing Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2004 00:55:55 +0000 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net All and sundry I just wanted to play devils advocate for a moment, to put a different spin on the self defense thread: I like most others have great respect for those who have survived countless life threatening encounters, and lived to tell the rest of us what its like, and what we could learn from it. But If we go on the premise that awareness and avoidance are the first and best lines of self defense, then it could be argued that someone who had made a career of avoiding violence would be equally qualified to teach the most effective self defense techniques. I think it was Peter Consterdine who coined the metaphor between road accidents and self defense; that poorly paraphrased went something along the lines of: So it is with self defense. Someone who carries the scars of a lifetime of bouncing off of cars, might not necessarily be the best person to go to when wanting to learn how to safely cross the road. I thought it was cool to be a tough guy, and to be looked up to because I was in the collection business at 16 years old, not my best moments in life, and definately not my fathers proudest moment, when he found out." Rocky, The main thing is that you put yourself into a condition where you had to "road test" a few thihgs here and there. This is where you and Gat Puno Abon have similarities. That's the point I was making. Yours, Dan _________________________________________________________________ Free up your inbox with MSN Hotmail Extra Storage.
