Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net ...you shake your head and wonder if you shouldn't turn in your black belt..... This week my teacher called up and asked if I'd bring an extra tactical folder to class. ... So I lend a blade to my training partner, and we start with drills on indexing, drawing and opening. We were so laughably slow that we were dumbfounded. Clearly I'd not spent nearly enough time learning how to draw the knife in all the time I'd spent in drills, sparring and work on fence posts ,etc. That's why I love working with him. He'll take something we think we know very well, tweak one little aspect, and patiently coach us as we piece it all back together. We're always much better at the end of the process. But there's always a point where my training partner and I wonder why we ever thought we knew this or that technique in the first place. As we finished a couple of reaction time drills, he pointed out, "At least you guys are maintaining a grip on your knives. Some people I've worked with get so wrapped up in trying to quick-draw that the knives go flying all over the place...." I've spent time after class, last night and periodically during the day today, practicing that drawing and opening drill..... I think as long as a system includes the different types of fight scenarios, it can offer to be a complete system. As to the "best 'complete system,'" hoo boy, that is certainly one for contention. Obviously, the more experienced the instructor, the greater number of scenarios that instructor can present. After that, it is mostly opinion based and better left to hypotheticals than actual fact. I suppose the best we can do is work to be prepared. George Washington said it best, "The best way to keep the peace is to be prepared for war." John Fontanilla Filipino Martial Arts Practitioner "use what talent you possess;the woods would be silent if no birds sang except those that sang best." Analogy: FMA System A : Garimot System :: Parker, PA Community College : _________ FMA System A is to Parker, Pa Community College as Garimot System is to "Blank" Answer: FMA System A is to Parker, Pa Community College as Garimot System is to Harvard University Explanation: I don't know if a community college exists in Parker, PA but I used Parker, Pa because it is supposed to be the smallest city in the United States. In a community college you have opportunites to learn many things but in a college you will have more choices on more subjects and in a university there will be more choices, more subjects than in a regular college. Rarely if not never does a student of Harvard University have to go to an institution like Parker, PA Community College to learn an advanced subject like high energy particle physics. So I hope this closes the door on why "for me" that the Garimot System is a complete system. I understand some instructors out there were never afforded the opportunity to learn as much as my instructor did and may be jealous or think that no system exists that is very comprehensive but again I welcome all to explore all the branches of Garimot rather than condemn it due to a lack of experience. Let this subject rest. Well, yes. Of course. But here's where what I said earlier comes into play. It depends on who you're teaching. Different students need different things. And they come to the table with different backgrounds. >It's not 'about fighting'... it's about 'not fighting', by which I mean >not being in a position where you need or have to. For a typical young guy taking martial arts this is very good advice. Someone with more testosterone than myelin needs to be told to use his brain, consider the consequences of his actions and think before he gets into serious trouble. He's likely to be getting into situations where he's mixing it up with other guys over status or insults or something else where the Law or his own better judgment the next day will be saying "You really didn't need to do that." For a typical woman taking a self defense class it's almost the opposite of what she needs to learn. The physical confrontation she is most likely to get into will be with someone larger and stronger who is considering committing a serious felony against her person. She has most likely not gotten in a fight since she was a little girl and probably has a lifetime of conditioning inhibiting her from violence along with a lot of deescalation and avoidance training. We want all the cars to be driving at a safe speed. Some of them are going too fast and need to be slowed down. Others are creeping along and need to step on the gas. As a teacher it's those unexamined assumptions that will get you. >Why would someone stand willingly, toe-to-toe, with an unknown >assailant if the option to escape is there for them to take? In a >potentially dangerous situation, forget your ego, and your pride. After >all, doesn't that come just before a fall? How about because if you don't someone will hold you down and jam his penis into you without your permission? And if you hesitate for an instant or hold back out of compassion or inhibition even a little you might not get that chance to escape. As I said, different situations call for different approaches. One size really doesn't fit all. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 19:10:58 -0800 (PST) From: Punong Guro Steven Dowd To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Philippines Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I want to thank the people that gave me leads for PI.
