Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Interesting yarn, but poses a lot of questions: (1) I have heard of the Samals, Badjaos, Ifugaos, Tasadays, etc., but who are the Kublans? What province do or did they live in? (2) I know about "Nardong Putik," but was "Boy Putik" another separate person who predated "Nardong Putik?" Lumping "Nardong Putik" or "Boy Putik" with the ninjas is a little bit of a stretch. (3) The rebels/outlaws with titles (Kumander, Ka, Kapitan, etc.) started with the Huks continuing to the modern NPA's. Again, a stretch to link or liken them to ninjas. (4) Just for levity--Give me about 20 tagays (shots) of lambanog (coconut wine, with very high proof), and even I will sally forth into any combat, feeling no pain (assuming I can still stand). Sidebar--Under the heading of wasted youth and rites of passage, I list drinking lambanog in fiestas in Quezon, Laguna, Pampanga, etc. as a must memory. BTW, the two tall guys in the clips are a couple of Shotokan and TKD black belts that used to assist for me at my (former) studio (easy to tell, they're the ones knocking everyone down with kicks - my boy Robert got a little excited and kicked the other fighter when he was down - good training, poor manners, lol). It's interesting to note that neither of them had very much FMA experience before the tourney. Anyway, Dean only had a few months to train them before the tournament, and I'd say he did a damn good job of it. Gat Puno (Head Chief) is a title of the Tagalog for Chieftain or the tribes ruler. Long ago Paete and other nearby town is ruled by Gat or Chief. That what some Filipino name is start with Gat like example Gat Dula (Chief Dula), Gat Maytan (Chief Maytan). Anyway, I used to tell my student to call me Punong Guro (Head Teacher) but everyone is using that title. On 1990 a closed friend of my Dad, Doring Bagonggahasa told me the story of the local Chief of Paete Gat Malangsangay, which he fought all the nearby Gat (Chieftain) in Laguna area and he won all the battle so he become the head of the Chief after that and they called him Gat Puno Malangsangay (Head of all Chieftain in Laguna). Then he told me since you been fighting all this Laguna fighter and you never lost from them, I think you have the right to call yourself Gat Puno (Head Chieftain of Laguna Arnis Federation International) He said that the title you used be proud about, you carry the Laguna;s name with you and the Paete I used the title ever since. "Garimot" is my Dad fighting name, that we all inherited from. All of us the 7 brother are known "Garaymot" the original spelling in Tagalog, but if you pronounced it in English is Garimot, meaning "Absorber." Slang Tagalog or Paetenians for Absorber. He was given the name on Jan, 13, 1950, after the Full contact Arnis Tournament in Lumban, Laguna and he become the Champion. All Eskrimadores is all shock the he seems like he absorbed all the hit, and it doesn't show to his face that he was getting hit. My father used to tell me you have to learn how to received the hit, to become a good fighter. Acknowledge them, and understand so you will learn where to hit your opponents, without repeating over and over. One hit to the right spot, fight must be over that what his goal. He also said if he show the opponent that he is not feeling the hit, or seems like nothing, his sees his opponent become afraid to hit him again. So when my older Brother Daniel and I start dominating all the tournament of Arnis in Laguna, everyone start calling us "Garaymot". Even my other 10 instructor called me Garaymot, so I got used to it, is in my name since. Even now, my father is has been gone for almost 18 years and to Paete citizens "Garimot" is pretty much alive to us siblings. Jay de Leon, Kabayan Salamat uli. You are right my town is weekend get away destination from Manilenos. Paete is 113 klm. from Manila is about 2 1/2 hrs if you drive, and about 3 1/2 to commute for public transportation. In a matter of 47 second Kumader Sabo assembled the 45 caliber faster that Rod Navarro. Anyway, my Uncle now 78 is still alive, and living in Binan, Laguna, he is well rounded Eskrimador . My youngest Uncle Rogelio "Andak" Baet is the notorious Hit Man of Carmona Cavite he killed 76 people on his listed, before he died his records comprontation in on the bridge of carmona Cavite on 1984 that killed 3 police officer and 2 civilian, he scapes from the water. The Authority never capture him, he died from poison set by his girlfriends, the day that he is decided to surrender to athority. Three weeks ago my first cousin a notorious Kumader GODOY of NPA found beaten to death in Infanta, Quezon for trying to protect his family and town mates. I heard about them that posses Anting anting, look what happen, Anting anting dont save them to sure death treats. They trying to link the killing to political rivarlry, is election time again in the Philippines, and killing candidates is common political game. Numerous Filipino movies, we watch all the true to life stories of these so called posses with Anting-anting. But its really make me think if this people has this Anting-anting why they let the Japanese invade the Philippines, why they let the American rules us for a while, the Spaniarsds? I am not a believer of Anting-anting. But I saw this thing work to someone, ithink is really you have to believed in it. I dont know, its hard to explain. Anyway, this is not like Ninja, that he has to go to a long training, the Robin Hood of the Filipino is just has a lot of got, and principle. Filipino is big on this "PRINSIPYO" They stand for what they believed, No Kubla, No Ninja thing, No Anting-anting just simple gots and tough decision.
