He is a working student and going home late at night is not a pretty sight with them running around. Despite his knowledge, he still gives a bottle of gin to the "siga" instead of money in his territory just to gain entry to the area he lives. The siga or tough guy loves to throw arrows soaked in fish trash. My dad's fellow passenger in the jeep died from an arrow shot, so I guess he was wise to be diplomatic. He ain't Sho Kosugi, I guess. LOL But the guy he gave gin to died also from arrows. I guess if someone threw shurikens, that would be a great scoop. :-) Cogie -- http://www.fastmail.fm - Accessible with your email software or over the web --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Kimberley Hobbs" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2004 08:00:31 -0330 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: student retention Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net    I've tried mixed classes and all female classes and I still have a problem retaining female students. The classes start out strong but fizzle over time. Our club is JKD/FMA so there is lots of variety but for some reason women don't stay any longer than a month or so. Maybe the classes are too intense or there is too much contact. When I started training six years ago there were three female students including myself. Are there any suggestions for attracting and keeping female students? Some people learn things very fast, while other people need special attention (that has been my experience with dealing with people). Some people are naturaly aggressive and like to learn how to break fingers and tear at eyes, other people like the IDEA of it all but, don't have the stomach for it all. The less aggressive personality will need a little more time to develope a working defense plan. That has been my experience, anyway. Males tend to be distinctively more aggressive than females. One of the principal reasons for aggression is to compete for rank within a social group: hierarchy. Many/most young males are virtually compelled to compete in some form or other. TKD, BJJ, Muay Thai, Vale Tudo, etc are highly responsive to this need/desire. So, in addition to Pugil's sound points, why the surprise that young males comprise the majority of martial art practitioners? There are some women who can and do operate in male environments but numerical parity of numbers is just not going to happen-- and that's OK. And there are things that can be done that are more responsive to women-- and thats OK too. Mongo now go in search of some "Liquid Skin" for scrapes on knuckles from dragging them on the ground. yip! (2) Ryan 7 > I have to say that I am happy to hear, thus far, that the biggest complaint of the Ryan 7 is the "thumb stud" issue. I will try with and with out, as suggested here, to see which feel better. I want to make sure its going to be a blade that fits me before I take the time to make a customized trainer for it. (3) CA Knife Laws > Since we are on the topic of folders does anyone know the 2004 California knife laws? I am trying to find out whether or not I can legally carry the Ryan 7 in my pocket. I have read an article that claims it is a legal knife as it is not considered a gravity, switch, blade, etc... type knife. But then I saw something that stated it was o.k. to cary a folder concealed but not one that locks when it opens. Does anyone know the actual PC or where I could look it up? I also live in Los Angeles so I should probably see if L.A. has some ordinance or something banning them. The one thing I do know is that I can not carry it at work where I teach (not that I would need to have a Ryan 7 around a bunch of 8th graders), but I have seen a law addressing that specifically. Thanks again for all the input. - Tyrkon - --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Rapid Journal, CRKT Ryan 7, & CA Knife Laws? But I would like to hear from some of the "red suit" type of intructors out there on how their success is in teaching those that don't have the stomach for real SD. --- jason couture wrote: > Hi all, - Can people be taught in 48hrs to defend > themselves? There are several though, that didn't do that. But they have similar type of mindsets. They want to better them self as a person. What I think our instructor does differently is that you are not intimidated when you walk in the door for the first class. He makes all his classes fun. Our number one rule is to "HAVE FUN". I know from a personal stand point, when you walk into a lot of gyms, it doesn't look like the people are having fun and that is a turn off to me. I spend some weeks, up to 6 evenings a week at the gym depending on what is going on and some Sundays, so I have to be having fun as well.
