I found a tiny little school tucked in the corner of my neighbourhood. I had no idea what the hell arnis was so I shrugged it off as some kind of "style" of taekwondo. It wasn't until the instructor (now my Guro) began showing my son drills with sticks, and showed me sinwali drills to practice with him at home that had me ask questions. He incorporates arnis in with his taekwondo classes to help his students improve their hand work and this includes children around 7 and up (kids any younger are still learning discipline). They use sticks and also a bo as well, but no blades. So I asked to join his weekly arnis class, which is very small by the way, and have been amazed since then. The children in our school have their own sticks and bags and are quite disciplined regarding there use. As it stands now, I do drills and now blade work with my son, who is now 11 at home. He understands how easy it is to screw up with a knife either using or defending against one, and THAT is what I find so valuable about it. Being in Canada there is an enormous likelihood that he will encounter knives in or around his school and I would like him to be educated about them should the event arise. Had he have just been trained in a dime store martial art, there is a good possibility he may seriously err in his judgment in this situation - not understanding the blade. As far as teaching it to children is concerned, the child should have some discipline infused in them first, but obviously I personally see the value in it. I'm uncertain as to how it is used since I've never read the book myself. The original language is in Tagalog(?) and something is always lost in the translation. However, a quick search on the web will yield several companies selling an English translation to the book. Pinning down the greased pig!! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I remember when I first started practicing my art, Arnis, Kali, or Escrima(call it what you want), in the mid nineties. The internet was certainly not what it is now. To get any info on the FMA you basically relied on oral tradition. A variety of theories abounded. One common story, usually coming from the Kali/JKD camp was that Kali was the mother art and all others came from it. My absolute personal favourite was that Kali was the warrior's art, and Arnis or Escrima was the Farmer's art, taught to the common folk in a time of emergency quickly and therefore not as in depth. Personaly having followed the debate about the origins and the use of the term Kali, I dont think the preceding explanations are valid. I thinks Guy's like PG Sulite, God Rest His Soul, and Guro Mark Wiley have succesfully put that to rest with very convincing research and explanations. Mark Wileys book can admittedly be wrong, but the effort and work put into making it what it is at this time, undoubtedly the largest and most concise book on it's topic. I would suggest to the original poster of this thread if he would like a non-partisan explanation of the FMA to read the FAQ on the home site to this digest. Following that I heartily recommend the book "Filipino Martial Culture" by Mark Wiley. An excellent and entertaining read. Personally I find this topic to be as debateable as where did Martil Arts Originate? Where ever two man fought and a third watched or asked to be taught after. One won/survived, one lost/died, and two learned and passed it on. The birth of a style. BTW posting in a place like this and then stating you do not want to debate or participate is cross purpose to the whole raison d'etre to the digest. Not to discredit the past nor the culture nor the structure, for we must have it in order to grow and evolve.... You have a great attitude!
